Remember nvidia spending 4/5 million on Crysis marketing?

That may be one of the reasons of the poor performance on ATI cards.

Just about every benchmark I've seen shows the 4870 leading the GTX 260 across the board in Crysis, so I don't really trust this one. That said, they're both about equal in price-performance, with the GTX 260 at $220+ and the 4870 at $240+.

They perform very similar. When AA/AF comes into play the HD4870 starts showing its lead.

Well I can start with a well respectated and a moust serious review.

Great review with may cards to compare with, even CF and SLI is there.

www.anandtech.com HD4xxx /gtx2x0 review.

HD4870 WINS in ALL games except oblivion, and a few times it's a good bit ahead the GTX280, so there is nothing even about this review.

Radeon HD 4870: Better Than GTX 260!

(Tomshardware review!)

Are you going to negligate the two biggest hardware reviewing sites on this planet?

Iv'e given you the two biggest sites with english speaking content and both give very simular benchmarks, HD4870 beat the gtx280 in almoust evry game except oblivion.

Unreal 3, Mass Effect are much better on the GTX 260. Crysis is like 1fps better on the HD 4870. 1fp = not worth $20.

Yeah the 48710 is better in most games, i think crysis is the main exception!

Although iots worth noting the new revised 260 GTX closes the gap making it about the same performance!

I can't say because a lot of games are catered and optimized for Nvidia which has led me to wanting to go with Nvidia cards in the future. I'm not satisfied with my HD4870's performance. :(

Look, a review from when a card is first releaced, which is 90% of the posts that I see here, is NOT an indication of how a card performs especially 4 months later. I have a gtx260 and Im not very happy with it. The drivers are terrable but they have come a long way since those reviews posted. I have never used a 4870 so I cant say anything about it. The best place to get an idea on how something performs is from end users in forums who have used both. I have heard great things about the 4870 from people who have used both cards, but the difference in performance is not huge for the most part and in some games can go either way. A 4 month old article using old beta drivers means nothing.

Hehe, naw. I'm done with Crysis, long ago, and it ran okay at about 30-35fps, with very bad dips.

Just to give you some examples, Company of Heroes all settings maxed out, I get 32 fps average. Framerates jump from 30-60fps, but it usually averages around that 32 mark.

The Witcher all settings maxed out, I get about 40-60fps. Some areas it will dip into the mid 30's, then it'll bounce back up.

I play on 1920x1200 resolution btw.

Besides the original Crysis, I'd like a graphics card that can run around 50-60fps, consistently. No less. I get in to a habit of playing a lot of games that are optimized for Nvidia as well. Grr.. I'm looking to switch to GTX 280, or the new GTX300 series if speculations are true.

Trust me those games dont play any better on a gtx260. I cant use dx10 in COH, The Witcher stutters like a bastard, and Crysis is Crysis I needed sli to plat that on Very High. My chipset drivers didnt help, Im sure. My board died so I have a p45 on the way. Ill see what kind of performance I get with that. But, the grass isnt so green on this side either.

Grrr, Firefox is giving me problems. I posted three times, lol.

Thanks for the feedback, Artie. That was really helpful.

I gather it's more of a "game" issue than a GPU problem. I wonder how the GTX 280 performs with these games and settings.

The Witcher is just like that it's very buggy. My board caused some problems, too. Nfarce chipsets are pretty bad. COH never ran well with dx10 it may have been a driver issue with my gtx260. I had alot of those, although its gotton better with driver 177.83. In fact thats the only driver that has ever treated me well. Crysis on very high with 2 cards in sli @ 1680x1050 would dip just under 30 fps during heavy combat in certain areas like relic. Since I lost my board I might sell off my cards, deffinetly one, and my p7n when I get a replacement and pick up a 4870x2, or mabey just a 4870.

I figured The Witcher was buggy. Not to mention the little bits of screen-tearing as well. Other than that, it runs pretty okay. I would go with the 4870x2. My initial plan was to get that card but I couldn't wait so I settled for the 4870. I'm even thinking about selling my HD 4870 and putting it towards an HD 4870x2.

So you have two GTX 260s in SLi? Ah okay, I see it in your sig. That's pretty sick.

Well, I hope you get your new stuff soon so you could be up and running again.
