I have a radeon r9 290 4gb graphics card, 8gb of ram, I5 2500k processor. I play on ultra settings smoothly however I notice when I drive very fast or there is fast paced action the game becomes extremely choppy, changing graphics settings seemed to make no difference. Anyone else experience this as I want the game to be smooth especially during tense missions

@Paddy345: I would lower or find the setting thats causing this issue with your rig.

Yea I have vsync on but I don't really wanna disable it to be honest unless it's massively responsible. I tried turning down and disabling AA which increased fps even more but the jitteryness was still the same in high intense scenes. It's annoying when your chasing someone and it becomes like a sideshow for about 3-5 seconds then continues as normal. What are the most demanding settings and I'll have a play with them?

Perhaps the game is using more than 4GB VRAM...

@horgen: it says im only using 3gb, perhaps its a driver issue or just a few settings I need to lower, I just can't find anything that helps the issue

One benchmark showed that it uses more than the game states when you adjust the settings. Check the other GTA V threads on this board. I would start with the thread having "benchmark" in the title.

I think that I have found the problem:

AMD Cards and MSAA Not Playing Well with Grand Theft Auto V

I will also make a post, so people will know.

I just downloaded the new 15.4 driver for AMD and it seems to have fixed the issue :-) no more choppiness at ultra. Benchmark tool seems to be broken though as it says im getting 30fps regardless if it's medium or ultra settings

I was having the same issue, it turned out to be the Northbridge was overheating on my motherboard! but the one on your board seams to be well spread out unlike mine

Glad you got it sorted :)

I found that shadows were usually causing me to stutter and hiccup, I had to change from Nvidia to Softest and Shadows from Very High to High, it helped quite a lot.

I set the game to Borderless Windowed which helped a lot with performance. I am using Nvidia but it could still work for you aswell.

Supposedly there is a problem with the launcher eating up resources. They patched it yesterday, but my frame rate is even worse. If I alt + tab and go back in the game it fixes it. If I close the launcher after entering the game I get silky smooth FPS on MAX settings... But unfortunately about 5-10 mins the game will crash and anything you did will not be save.

So the cause of all the frame dips and crap performance from what I seen... Lies solely on the launcher.
