After playing call of duty 4 or gta iv, or other graphics intensive games for 20-40 minutes my computer will freeze, black out, the graphics driver will reset, or a few times it will blue screen. I'm pretty sure it's over heating, or theres a bug in the vram.

Is there any way to fix this without getting a new graphics card. (If i did it would be nvidia 9800 gt 512mb, would that work with my psu?)

core 2 quad 6600 2.4ghz G0 stepping

ati x1950 pro 512mb

2 gb g.skill ddr2 ram

500 watt rosewell power supply

Is the fan spinning correctly or is there lots of dust in the fan?

I did sort of clean it before, but it wasnt that dusty and the problem continued. also it's done this over the course of several driver updates, so that's not the issue.

Has this problem just started? Was it working fine before?

Sounds like the card could be faulty to be honest, wait a minute to see if anyone else can help.

It sounds like the graphics card but I try it in another computer to see if it is fine. Sometimes the motherboard could be the problem. ATI is getting this problems a lot could be some kind of conflict with certain hardware.

My X1950pro had the problem in some games fine in others. I dropped it in another computer worked fine. Dropped an Nvidia in the other computer which had the problem with ATI card again fine. Weird problem. I can only put it down to the ATI in some kind of conflict with the hardware.

First try that card in anothers computer and you can see if it works there then you know it is something else or just ATI incompatible with your system.

Yes the 500W would work with a 9800GT. I have 500W with 8800GT and Q6600 works fine.
