Didn't play many pc games from 2016. I guess of this year, DooM, but that's multiplatform.

Most enjoyable overall was System Shock: Enhanced Edition.

After Witcher 3 last year, none of the games this year feel like they are worthy of the title.

I didn't have any major issue with the controls, especially after the character movement patch. It is not the deepest combat system, but it is still fun and the game is amazing.

I havent really even finished many games this year. Finished Rise of The Tomb Raider, and it was pretty damn good. Deus Ex MD is awesome so far. DS3 is pretty good so far. Shit, I am not even done in the base game of Witcher 3 yet, so I cannot even speak on Hearts of Stone, much less Blood and Wine. Really liking Mafia 3, even though everyone crapped on it.

Maybe Starbound, since it technically full released a few months ago?

Speaking of last year, BroForce got no love. Gamespot didn't even bother reviewing it.

Dam good game.

LOL. You are still stuck in the past. I enjoyed games like Contra and Metal Slug too, but it is time to move on.

Street Fighter V is far ahead of the pack as my favorite game this year regardless of platform, but I played it on PC.

The best PC centric game I played this year was probably Civ 5, though obviously it didn't release this year.

A game being well designed and more importantly, fun, isn't really tied to the times though.

It's not like the industry is really birthing new genres anyways. The vast majority of modern games are just different takes on stuff we already had gen 6 and prior.

He is always stuck in the past. Always talking about Quake 2 or some other game. That is why I tell him it is time to move on. I can appreciate old school gameplay in modern games like Doom 2016 or Ori and the Blind Forest, but I am not into that hipster retro pixel art indie bullshit. I understand the appeal to make such a game as a developer as it requires a minimal budget and time investment. However, from a gamer perspective, it does not interest me as I only have time to play so many games and I would like to see more effort and polish put forth in the games I play. That graphic style is a gimmick that does nothing for me.

DOOM's campaign was pretty bland. Enter an area. It gets locked off. Monsters keep spawning. Kill them. Listen to a really lame story. Repeat 100x times. Way too repetitive for my taste. Titanfall 2 (and Battlefield 1 & Dishonored 2) had a far better campaign(s). Titanfall 2 was varied, had amazing set pieces, had cool characters, always introduced new things each level, ect, ect ,ect. I voted other because Dark Souls III and Rise of the Tomb Raider was better than any of those.

@saintsatan: TF2 campaign was good, BF1 campaign was a joke, and I have not played Dishonored 2. Doom shits all over the BF1 campaign any day of the week. I don't understand why people praise the BF1 campaign. Other than the pre-rendered cutscenes (which were a cheap way to gain some fucks being given), there were very few redeeming qualities from the BF1 campaign. It was mediocre at best.

What makes Doom great is the fluid nature of the combat and the encounters. It is very visceral and satisfying slaying all the demons. The level design was also great with an emphasis on verticality and exploration. It also had such a bad ass feel to it with the way the graphics, sound, and overall design came together.

@BassMan: Different tastes I guess. I prefer a FPS that has varied action and sections like Metro and Dishonored that have smart enemies and AI. DOOM was the same from start to finish and had enemies with AI from the year 1995. None of the enemies react even slightly to anything. They just spawn, mindlessly move around at random, and shoot you. This shit isn't acceptable in 2016. It just felt like a really lazy made game. And I highly disagree with the great level design. They took the same textures/doors and just copy pasted it all over and threw a couple skulls and corpses on the ground at random. It was so generic looking. It looks amazing on a technical level though.

Also I'm not saying the game is bad. I had fun with it and still play it. I just think it's overrated. I wouldn't say it's "good". It's average in every aspect imo.

@saintsatan: Doom is best played on Ultra Violence and above. I find the game did a great job with ramping up the challenge as you went through the game. There was strategy to the chaos. I like how it made you prioritize the threats and kept you moving. I also love Metro and enjoyed the first Dishonored, but it is of course a very different game.

It's not the difficulty, it's the AI. I don't want it to be harder, I want it to be smarter. I want enemies that react to whats going on around them. I want low HP enemies to flee and get back-up and then attack in a group. I want enemies to work together and have complex movements. I want them to hide and take cover in unpredictable fashion. I want complex attack patterns and a lot of variety in each enemies attacks, not just a single fireball throwing attack or one charge attack. At the very least they could have thrown in some champion monsters that were a stronger/harder version of their regular to mix it up a little bit.

Also the gory kills were WAY overdone. Christ I got bored of mashing the gory kill button 10 minutes into the game and I had to do it for 10 hours. They should have made it so you could only do a gory kill if you got a critical hit or something. I preferred DOOM 3 for it's more progressive level design and atmosphere and not just arenas with endless spawn enemy waves. But like I said I still enjoy DOOM. The arcade mode is fun to play once in a while. I really wish the DLC wasn't all for the meh multiplayer. Some more campaign would have been better.

FEAR 1 is a rare gem in that regards. You will NEVER see a game like that ever again. A real fuckin game, made by dedicated gamers for dedicated gamers. This game also seperates the real gamers from those just seeking a simulator masquerading as a 'fps' depending if they like/hate it. I still remember back in the day how there was a group who said F.E.A.R. was a shitty FPS because it had "boring environments". Says enough what kind of "gamer" these guys are. HAHA.

To get back onto topic. None of the 4 listed actually deserves the GOTY. But if I got to pick one it is Titanfall 2.

Yup. I played FEAR when it came out and I still own it. That AI was light years ahead of it's time and is better/smarter than 90% of the garbage out now.

Why is Dishonored 2 even on the list?

Anyway for me it would be Rise of the Tomb Raider, although I think Overwatch is more deserving of the title.

Just started and am already loving Dishonored 2.
