Ok, I have a really OLD PC. Therefore, I've been a console gamer. But, I'm going to give a few older games a try on my pc, ones that got good ratings and will play on my rig.

ESIII: Morrowind GOTY Edition - I never played an RPG before, but this game looks intruiging. Maybe a good play before I get a platform that has oblivion.

Clive Barker's Undying - Looks pretty Neat

No one lives forever 2 - A friend said it was the best spy game ever, he highly reccomends it and, after all, he turned me on to MGS and rsident evil, i owe it to give the game a shot.

So are these some fun, less-taxing expereinces?

No One Lives Forver 2 is pretty fun, but as we go on, we don't find all those old games that much fun anymore, but you should still give it a try.

Morrowind, Undying, and NOLF 2 are "meh"?  Those games are universally respected by everyone, and loved by many.

Good choices, I also suggest picking up Deus Ex and Diablo 2.

all good games.. don't know if i'd call them old though. Starcontrol. that's old ;) don't play these for graphics they aren't anything by today's standards BUT, I know from experience that Undying is a great game. it's really well done and scary. the pace of the game as well as the cinematic story telling is superb. NOLF2 is left my in tears. I suggest that you don't rambo in this game. You'll want to over hear what the henchmen say before you kill them. it's like an Austin Powers spy fps but not never as played out and begging for laughs as the AP movies turned into.

Deus Ex was great. D2...meh. not that much of an upgrade from the first to me. good for mindless clicking and the loot hungry.

I've spent easily over 500 hours playing Morrowind. Can't go wrong with that.

For older games, you can't go wrong with the ones you listed...but here's a few more you shouldn't miss (along with those already mentioned):

System Shock 2, Total Annihilation, Shogun: Total War, Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition, Gothic 2, Populous: The Beginning, and Thief 2: Metal Age

Dude, Morrowind with a few good mods and you will love it. It truely is a fantastic RPG and I love that game. Diablo 2 Eh, it was fun but i'm over it. But Morrowind is, in my opinion, one of the grestest RPG games I have ever played (with good mods of course). Oh and there are a few good Sub sim games, and Quake 2 and Half Life.

No one in this thread has talked up Clive Barker's Undying yet - but it's a very good game. It's still worth playing today.

I'd also recommend System Shock 2 and for RTS you can't go wrong with Starcraft.

All good choices.

Morrowind might be a little daunting for a first time RPG player. They kinda just dump you off, give you a couple directions, and then let you figure the rest out on your own. Definetly a good game, though, once you know what you're doing.

Undying is one of my favorite horror games.  Sadly, I think it doesn't get enough recognition these days. The combo of guns and spells make it a real winner, as well as its surprises and creepy atmosphere.

While I was never a huge fan of the NOLF series, I know there's a lot of folks out there that loved it.

Funny, I'm ready to play 3 even older games for the first time:

  • Fallout (ok, I have been playing this one lately)
  • Grim Fandango
  • System Shock II

So far Fallout's Gameplay has been deep and satisfying, though the Graphics and Diabloesque movement are archaic.

Can't wait until I play the other 2.

On topic: lol, I have the 3 games you are about to play, but i haven't played them yet either. I tend to get more games than i have a chance to play.

Those are not very old games. When I think of old, I think of the original Castle Wolfenstein.

You could try X-com. It's pretty fun.

Due to the fact that good new games are not being churned out fast enough, I highly recommend some of the other posters suggestions. Here are the one's you NEED to play:

  • Arx Fatalis
  • Divine Divinity
  • Diablo II + Lord of Destruction
  • Clive Barker's Undying (good choice)
  • Freespace 2
  • Deus Ex
  • System Shock 2
  • Starcraft
  • Gothic 2
  • Fallout 2
  • Planescape Torment

These are all I can think of atm, but there are tons of others...

I agree. Morrowind is  something I wouldn't go with if your new to rpgs. It was overwhelming for me...and I have played a bunch of rpgs.

I tried out NOLF 2 but couldn't get into it. Though, like this man states, it was well received. If your into those James Bond type games, you will love it.

Try out games like Half life, Thief, Deus Ex, System Shock.

At the moment I am playing Baldur's Gate 2 and The longest Journey.

Baldur's Gate 2 is a little overwhelming as well, since I am new to D&D rules and spells.

But give those games a try as well. I think most have demos.

You absolutely must play Baldurs Gate 2

And also try Nox   It's a decent alternative to Diablo 2

BG2 is the finest RPG I have ever played. I hope you enjoy it. However, I have finally just started playing Fallout, and its awesome as well.

I see you are playing Longest journey as well, that, in contrast, is my pick for my most dissapointing PC game I've ever played, though I'd say Halo is up there as well.
