OK I've current got a Ryzen 1400 and since I'm getting the 3080 reference card for water cooling, I realized that it's gonna be a massive bottleneck. Should I just get a 3600x or just wait for the 4600?

Mobo: Asus prime x570-pro
16gb DDR4 ram (should be 3200mhz but the 1400 means only 2999mhz).
PSU is corsair RMX 750w

How long can you wait? We should know more about Ryzen 4 this month and if the rumours are true it should be available october/november.

If you can wait then I certainly would. That being said a 3600x isn't going to cause you issues and will pair nicely with the ampere cards.

@netracing: I probably could wait a few months, either way the 3080 would be a massive improvement to the 1060 I'm currently rockin, even with the bottleneck.

the 3080 will be ~4x faster than your 1060, you're mind is going to be blown.

I hope your monitor is faster than 60hz or you'll just be wasting money.

3000 is not even released yet, by the time these GPUs will be in stock, AMD will launch Zen3, so I don't see what exactly is the issue here. + AMD will release Zen3 and RDNA2 at the same time (most likely October) so nvidia might even be forces to cut the prices on 3000 series.

On the other hand, you can bet your ass that a 3600X will give you better FPS/dollar than the brand new 4600X (will be 15-20% faster for ~25% more money), but I would not even consider anything below 3700X if you want to get a 3080.

@rmpumper: so either just get a ryzen 7 3rd gen or some sort when the 4th gen is out or just get the 4th gen. I guess I'll just wait for the clock speed announcements.

The new ryzen won't launch until Q1, very confident you won't see them this year. Small chance for a Nov/Dec I guess.

Not sure if Koplite is good at his rumors, but apparantly Big Navi has some serious grunt, will have 6GB more vram than 3080.

The MSI X570 tomahawk is your best bet for a least expensive board, decent VRM. Check B550 too.

@Random_Matt: I've got an Asus x570- pro sitting in the cupboard waiting for a new CPU. Thought about getting the 3900 but would rather a 6 core high clock speed.

Fair enough, mine can do 4.5 all cores.

I say either wait for AMD 4000 series or get now Intel 10000 series.

The 3000 series doesn't offer anything special over Intel's new series - in fact Intel provides better performance for the same price.

@Random_Matt: yeah I would love a ryzen 9 but they are way out of my budget, I'm already pushing the missus with the 3080 and new CPU.

@gerygo: to much to change/lot of wasted money to switch to Intel.

If it uses the same socket for Ryzen 3000 or 4000 series then sure I agree you'll need to buy a new MOBO to change to Intel but other than that everything stays the same.

Unless your gaming on a 1080P 240Hz monitor... I would just get a 3070X and call it a day, no CPU upgrade will benefit gaming at the resolutions we play at today especially with Ray Tracing going on its all completely GPU dependant.

I would say even a 3600X and 10600K will be more than enough for gaming for the entirety of this generation if you plan on gaming at 1440/4K resolutions with a RTX 3080/3090.

I don't even plan on upgrading my 8700K for another 2 years for the same reasons, just no benefit at these resolutions and graphically demanding technology.

People on first generation Ryzen and anything prior to Coffee lake on Intel need to be worried though.
