Apparently this series will come on market in Feb - March. I was wondering if I should ride out the temptation of buying a 8800GT now and wait until drop in price? Do you think it would be worth the wait or will there not be major price cuts as I have noticed the 8800GT is really popular.

Well the demanded for the 8800GT right now is high and prices are inflated. If you have patience, you could wait if you want to. If you wanna game now, then you could upgrade.

Also would there be a significant price drop or would it be a small £10 to £20 pounds?

Personally, I would just get the 8800GT, the price drop after the next gen cards come out wont be that much, prob around $50 or more.

If you are waiting for the 9 series to come for buying them then yes do wait however if you waiting for the 8800GT's price to drop i really doubt it will happen for some time. The 9 series cards would be something like $450 atleast so i dont think that the GT will be affected by that.

Alright probabaly in my price range, the 8800GT would be sufficient enough for me. Also how long do you think it might be until this card is out of date. I had the 6600GT for 3 years and now it doesn't meet the minimum requirement settings for Crysis.

Well it all depends on you really. It cant play crysis but the 6600GT can play most other games pretty easily on low settings.I am sure the 6600GT can still play some games in 2008 as well. It's not that crysis is come and now every game wont work well.

Ya i think it is pretty much the right time to upgrade your card even if you are among those who like to take out the last possible juice from your investment. And i am sure with a jump from the 6800 to 8800 you will replaying alot of games which you previously played on low settings.

I have the alpha dog XXX version.I know XXX stands for overclocked but i dont knowhow alpha and regular card differ. There are also non-overclocked alpha cards so if you want to buy the xfx overclocked make sure it has the XXX on it and you will be fine. They also sell XT variants which are slower than XXX.

And for me that is one of the most exciting things about upgrading.I usually dont replay games but when playing in low settings with a low res and unstable fps, then when you can play in max with 60+fps you almost feel like you never played the game before.

yeah you will have to wait 2-3 months maybe a bit longer as they will probably be released late in the UK and you could expect to pay upto £400 for a high end one, so you will be better of getting a GTS G92 now.

Well, the Ati radeon 3870 is 50 bucks less than the GT and is VERY close in comparison, and I think its only going to get better since ATI aint so good with their drivers....So there's a different route than anything else...you can use that 50 bucks to start saving up for the 9000 series though :P

Get the EVGA model, that way you can see if it's sufficient enough for you and if not pay a little extra in February for the new series.

I dunno guys, if you read the latest info about AMD they state that they won't be releasing any new GPU technology until 2009! What does this mean? Nvidia could just keep making 8800 revisions and make $$$. I can't see them releasing the Geforce 9 without any competition.

DO NOT WAIT, you won't anyway. Waiting for the next best thing is kinda like waiting for Brittany Spears skirt to fly up, when you finally get done waiting, it really wasn't worth the wait.

You need to wait until you have a game you feel needs the upgrade, and then get the next big GPU release close to that game.

Hold on - before the "but why not wait forever?" people jump in. Let's take a look at Crysis. Now, if you bought an 8800gtx a year ago, and are now enjoying it with Crysis, you got your money's worth. If you bought it a month before Crysis came out "in preparation", you honestly wasted money - the 8800gt provides similar performance for significantly less money - going SLI with a pair gives you *more performance for the cash*.

So the right answer to the question is "do you have a game (or games) you're looking to get more out of?" If the answer is a confident "yes" then you needn't think a second longer, push the "buy it now" button and enjoy. However, if the answer is "no" - then wait. There's no sense jumping before you have a reason.
