Do the majority of pc gamers (on this board or otherwise) respect the tastes of people buying DLC or EA micro-transactions?
The consumers supporting this pretty clear cash grab will spill over to me directly as publishers being opportunistic assholes, will copy-paste.
As someone who predominantly uses steam because I don't buy into origins £49.99 - £59.99 bullshit (and no I don't want to shop around and for over a decade haven't had too) it pisses me off immensely. It willbecome standard. I have about as much respect for these people as dog dirt on the side of the road, pretty much like the publishers really.
Publishers are more or less outright saying "hey, we think your fucking idiots". Nobody is exactly proving them otherwise.
I'll answer from my point of view and personal opinion:
DLC: it's basically the new EXPANSIONS. I don't agree with Day1 DLC. I don't agree with DLC costing $15 and giving you 2 new maps and 2 old maps redesigned. I don't agree with paid DLC giving you a few more extra costumes or whatever.
I do however agree with DLC when there is actual content there that expands the story or has a side story. For example Alan Wake DLC (which was paid), but even better Alien Isolation DLC which is free if you pre-order.
With DLC you have to look at it from the same point as expansion back in the day. Some expansions were great and worth it, some weren't.
Micro-Transactions: tough one but I would only agree with them if they were purely fun or cosmetic. Ones that give you extra XP or other in-game boosts are a no-no in my books.
Saying that, someone can buy a game without supporting the DLC. I've always played the COD games but never bought the DLC.
As for standard, you are saying it WILL, I am saying it ALREADY is standard. But we only have the impatient new generation of gamers to blame for that. Those same ones that will put down $120 for Early Access. Things that developers wouldn't even dream of charging 20 years ago. If everybody stopped supporting these schemes, then developers would stop offering them for a fee.
Don't know why you differentiate Steam and Origin though. They are basically 2 shops that do the same thing.
