Games we loved but didn't last

I wanted to hear about some games you all have played that you loved and thought was awesome, but for some reason or another didn't make it big or was cancelled.

For me there are two that I can remember, at least for the moment. Horizons was an MMORPG that I played for a few months and thought was very entertaining. You could play as a dragon and I thought it was a good idea that you could shape the world, by the players coming together and building structures around the world. Then the devs would send enemies to attack them so you had to help defend.

Second for me is A Tale in the Desert. Even though this game is still going it just doesn't seem to have the buzz that it deserves. Most people I talk with have never even heard of it, but again another really cool idea for an mmorpg.

So there's my 2 cents, let's hear yours.

Also have to mention System Shock series.

Oddworld-series.

Beyond Good and Evil. Although there are rumors that a sequel is on it's way, hopefully that's true.

Edit: Forgot to mention that it's a real shame Troika went down the drain. One more game from them would rule.

Basically the entire adventure genre, 2D games and good platformers.

Two games I would've loved, though, are a Doom 3 that played like Ultimate Doom and Doom II instead of the crap they came up with, and for the System Shock series to have continued. Awesome characters, awesome gameplay mechanics. SS2 even sets up a sequel. It's a travesty!

Oh yeah, another one was Severance: Blade of Darkness. The devs went into the red after the game was released, and it's a shame because the game had excellent melee combat (for its time) and real cutting edge graphicss (though they have not aged well at all).

is on "HOLD" for like a year or so... and probably canceled...

For consoles I would say Killer 7 for sure. That game was something very different but I completely became immersed in that game.

For PC, NOLF3 is long overdue as well as a new Max Payne.

Shenmue for dreamcast, my favourite game of all times.

I got so pissed when I heard the third and last game was cancelled. :(

Arcatera had little support and fixes and the Westka Corp. went bankrupt.

Shenmue 2 was one of the greatest games I ever experienced but it seem everybody passed by this.

Conker Live and reloaded was also one of my favorite games for the xbox platform which I wish came to the PC platform. The Multiplayer was a marvel.

Too late but I agree the game was phenomenal. I recommend anyone looking for a great adventure you should give this a try.

Syndicate was another one.

And, in general, flight simulations...there just arent a lot anymore, be it space, civilian, or military. I would kill for another Jane's Combat Simulations game, especially a Longbow 3 or ATF 2.

Max Payne 2 didn't sell very well - No idea why, its a terrible shame.

I don't think Thief: DS did either - It was very hard to get it in Australia even. I had to get my copy of Ebay.

I await Alan Wake but fear it has been lost in the Abyss or something.

I want Harpoon 4, Age of Sail III, Hidden and Dangerous III, Jagged Alliance III.

I want a Commandos III that doesn't suck because they dumbed it down and sped it up for the instant gratification crowd.

I want a party based isometric fantasy D&D RPG that puts the single player experience first, last, and only. (Damn you NWNW! I hate you so very, very much! Use the TOEE engine! It's awesome!)

I want Fallout 3 but not the way Bethesda seems to be making it. (I hope I'm wrong about this and F3 turns out to be awesome.)

I want a return of the golden era of flight sims, space sims and wargames like in the mid-90s.

I want Sir-Tech to come back. I want Interplay and LucasArts to make games like they used to do.

I want a Commandos II that doesn't suck because they dumbed it down and sped it up for the instant gratification crowd.

Oh okay. Sorry, I haven't played the third game. I loved the first two - some of the first games that I got.

What was wrong with this one other than being the same?

Commados III basically emasculated the game. They cut out all the specialists except for 5. You get the green beret, the spy, the sniper, the thief, and the sapper. Most of their special abilities are gone and, to be honest, most of the challenge is gone too. You can play it like you played the first two and struggle to time everything perfectly, but they went and made it so that, if all that planning and thinking gets you down, all you need to do is grab the green beret and use his new machine gun ability. He grabs a handy machinegun from a close-by German bunker and can then proceed to Rambo his way through the entire level.

They designed the levels with this new combat focus in mind too. Most don't involve stealth and precision, just mowing down wave after wave of enemy. It's really boring, doesn't involve much thought or skill and feels more like you're playing Gauntlet with automatic weapons than it does like a Commandos game.

I never even bothered with the FPS installment. The demo was enough to convince me of that.

There is potential in that imo...m sure Codemasters or EA can make it awesome again !!

Total Annihilation.. Cavedog closed its doors and then there was no sequel :(

Supreme Commander is nothing like TA.. its on a HUGE scale and feels very different because of the scale. Id want a proper sequel, not a spiritual one.

Oh hell yeah! There was a sort-of spinoff, too, called Skitchin, that was far more enjoyable for me than Road Rash. I think the concept was also absolutely 100% completely unique. I'd love to see both games back.

UFO (enemy unknown) and Master of Magic also come to mind. Several companies have attempted to re-created those 2 but failed miserably.
