FPS and no legs

I've always wonder why in the FPS genre of game's your character never has any leg's, I've already googled this to no avail, what is up with character's having no legs. You look straight down and nothing. Hopefully someone has a legitamte reason as to why.

Many game don't have them because they can be fairly tricky to implement and sometimes they get in the way of your view.

Its not really a neccessity, it makes things more realistic, sure, but it takes too long to program it usually, and if they made one thing, they would have to make another, and another, and another. Although I do agree it can get somewhat odd at times, games with the legs shown are usually better in that aspect.

No it wasn't.

The first game that I ever played where you could see your own legs was Operation Flashpoint. It was done quite well, since you could see the rest of your body as well. If you turned your head and looked down, *gasp!* your character had shoulders! I also thought it was funny because you could shoot yourself in the leg. Like I said... It was quite realistic, and it was done very well.

OFP was WAY before Halo 2!

Actually there is this older Jurassic Park shooter (Tresspasser?) where you could see your legs...in addition to your own cleavage, complete with a heart tatoo

yeah, arms should be the next addition. That is the only thing that I didn't really like in HL2.

That was a revolutionary game. Not only seeing your own body, it tried to use 'real' physics. However it crashed and burned but not forgotten.

First time I saw legs in a 'FPS' was Arkane's own Arx Fatalis.

I always wanted a fps to actually be fps............normally its a view thats about an inch from your eye. Where is my nose chest and shoulders. I also always wanted a monitor that bent around me for a more realstic FPS.

agree i want a full body interactive FPS (proyect origin for example looks great) but there are loads of game with body, The Darkness, Call of Juarez, Halo 2 & 3, F.E.A.R. i think oblvion as well but its not a shooter... and a lot more still i want something more like project origin

Half Life 2 failed on that i would love to have even the glasses in you head... anyway its my favorite game also Doom 2 wich has no body... but cmon hehe they are both awesome

That doesnt bother me as much as the fact that you dont use your hand when you pick up items or interact with things in almost all games. I would think that we are now beyond the point where you just walk over a weapon or item in order to pick it up, I remeber doing this in DOOM. I had hoped a decade ago when I played SS (where you had to actually "Pick up" an item) that things would change, but this is still a commonly used mechanic.Philmon

I remember some id game, one of the dooms maybe, where the easiest difficulty said "try not to shoot yourself in the foot", and seeming as that you could look down and HEY, there are your legs, you could shoot yourself in the foot, and yeah, flashpoint also had BODY PARTS.

Yeah lol, for some reason I never cared that Freeman, even though his hands are clearly visible, he doesn't use them. What a badass :P

Some games have mods that add the body feature, I've seen it in oblivion and its pretty nice.
