Hi all!

I'm new around here, and have a quick question: I used to play Dungeons and Dragons when I was a teenager, and I don't if it's because my wife is crazy about Harry Potter or what ... but all of a sudden, I find myself wanting to go back to roleplaying.

I was wondering if someone could give me some advice and help in choosing a good RPG for PC, with a D&D spirit: character creation, races, missions, fights but not only fights, magic etc ... Of course in video games, I understand that graphics and playability playsa role too!

I just looked at World of Warcraft, which looks goods, but would like to hear more from specialists!

Thanks for your help

Zac

Sounds like you might like Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2. Both have online with small communities of D&D role-players. Alot of server are set up specifically for people like you. Every plays in character, lot's of magic, questing, ect. I am not at all into that, but I have accidently wandered on to a few servers like that. It's probally the closest experience to playing D&D in someone's basement as you can get :P

I would probally recommend NWN 1 (platinum pack), as it's online community is mucgh more developed.

Try the Neverwinter Nights Platinum pack and Temple of Elemental Evil. Both of those are based on newer DnD rulesets.

Right! I just took a look at some of the reviews, basic rules, FAQ .... my first impressionis that Baldur's Gate is maybe better for me ... I don't know, I guess I will be playing mostly alone, I do not feel like creating my own world and be a DM and probably spend too much time.

I really feellike playingfor a couple ofhours on a campaign every now and then, and make it move forward little by little. Also, I read some reviews on Baldur which said thatthere was a great deal of strategy in it, not a "fight and run" game, and I like that!

I don't know if I'm right or wrong, but it seems to me that Baldur is more of a "plug and play" experience...What do you think?

Thx!

Thanks. I just checked Temple of Elemental Evil, it looks good too..!

I took a look at some reviews on Amazon too, and I have to say the Neverwinter Nights seems to beat them alit is hard to choose!

My understanding right now is that Baldur is considered one of the best ever, NWN follows-up very well and according to some "takes where Baldur II left", and ToEE may even be the closest to D&D but has a lot of bugs and is slower because of a different combat system..

I have one other question: let say I pick these 3 among the games which were quoted in this thread. Is there one that would maybe be more appropriate to start with? If I like the concept, I may end up playing all 3 eventually..!

Thanks again!

In my opinion, I think you may be best starting with NWN 1 as the graphics aren't as dated as Baldur's Gate II. However, BGII is a nice looking game for it's time. I liked NWN2 better than the first one, but the first may better fit the style you describe. I mean, they are similar, but NWN2 is a bit different and the graphic engine is based of Knights of the Old Republic (Star Wars). The one big difference between NWN2 and NWN1 is that you have more playable characters in the second, which may effect your decision. NWN1 has a lot of gameplay and several expansions. NWN2 expansion is going to be released shortly.

Another thing to consider is how up-to-date your computer system and graphics card. You'll have no problem with Baldur's and NWN1, but NWN2 will require current technology.

As for Baldur Gate II, it's on the Gamespot greatest games list. A very epic game with great story and dialogue and a couple of good expansion that will give you 100s of hours of gameplay. Again, I think NWN1 is a good place to start. If you like it, you can pick up NWN2 later. I'd go ahead a pick up BGII now since you can get the combo boxes for very cheap and maybe play it casually alongside the others.

Ultimately, I think you will like all these games. I would avoid the Temple game for now, even though I heard the patches fixed it up quite a bit, but there's probably still enough bugs to frustrate a newbie.

You may want to try Icewind Dale first. It is a bit more action-orietated and fast-paced than Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights so its a good place to start if you are a bit rusty. Temple of Elemental Evil is jsut as good for similar reasons, but its a bit more straightforward and what you'd expect from playing the original table-top D&D, even though it uses 3.5 Ed. Rules.

For a true D&D experience you will want to try Baldur's Gate (if you can find it, it's quite possibly my all-time favorite RPG in existance, especially the second one) and Neverwinter Nights. WoW is a brilliant game but rather poorly reflects a true D&D feel if that's what you're looking for. Oh, and Icewind Dale is a good thing to try too...still need to order that....

Icewind Dale 2 is also an amazing D&D-style rpg, one of the last great ones of its kind. It's very similar to Baldur's Gate 2, but with better graphics (BG2 is ~2 years older). So if you have a hard time getting over the dated graphics, or just want to follow up with a similar after completing BG2, go with Icewind Dale 2.

Fantasy RPGs

* Baldur's Gate I & II
* Neverwinter Nights I & II
* Morrowind
* Oblivion
* Planescape Torment

Sci-Fi RPGs

* Knights of the Old Republic I & II (Recommended if you love Star Wars)
* Fallout I & II

First Person Shooters (With RPG Elements)

* Boiling Point
* Deus Ex I & II
* System Shock (and Bioshock - coming out soon!)

All of these (except the FPS's) have decent character creation, and I highly recommend everything on this list. :)

Cool! I didn't expect some many options to be available! I'm going to start with BG2, than NWN1 to get acquainted, but it's great to see that it won't stop after that!

However, it doesn't look like there is a lot of current development of such games...?

Well, if you're looking for good role play you should definitely try World of Warcraft. LOL! No seriously, you should check out NWN and NWN2 as others here have suggested. It has a great modding and on-line community, plenty of role play servers if that's your thing or hack n' slash if the mood strikes you. Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 are classics that you should also look into if you're more interested in excellent story driven single player RPG. All of these are based on the D&D ruleset.

It is no where close to the D&D experience IMHO. It's an excellent game but it's an action rpg game.
