I've decided to man up and play one of these :)
So I was wondering ... which one should I choose ? Which is better in terms of scare factor , graphics , gameplay , story , level design etc... ?Thank you !

OBVIOUSLY play Part 1 first....so you get the story correct....
I still don't understand why people ask these questions.... why would you play Part 2 first if the first one is only a few years old?
Same with movies....
I would DEFINITELY play both, but I would start with the first. As someone said in order to fully get the story (the "last time in Dead Space" video does pretty good, but not completely) you will want to play through the first installment. SerOlmy
Agreed. And actually, the "Last Time" video is extremely sketchy on some parts. Granted, it may also be an attempt from giving too much of a spoiler if you play the second one first.
I enjoyed DS1 more, but I'd recommend a newcomer to just go for DS2. The graphics are quite improved, as are the controls and their responsiveness. However, if you feel you have a lot of time, do go for DS1 as well, but don't forget to turn off V-Sync (and maybe also consider getting a 360 controller, too).
Newcomer to just go DS2? But the story dude...I enjoyed DS1 more, but I'd recommend a newcomer to just go for DS2. The graphics are quite improved, as are the controls and their responsiveness. It's true and I thought about this a bit. But consider that there is a gap of story between DS 1 & DS 2 missing. And frankly, DS2 raised a lot more questions than it answered, unlike DS1.
I will agree that DS1 feels way more unique, perhaps because of the story and the way its introduced - piece by piece. And Isaac never speaks, too. All the more intense.
Really, now I don't know what to think, after you brought this up. I tried DS1 (already beat once) after completing DS2, and DS1 felt lackluster in several ways. Certainly not the story, though.
Well with most games it's like that....they of course improve on the sequel. The BEST way to play the series is: - Watch the Movie (Downfall) - Play Dead Space 1 - Watch the Movie (Aftermath) - Play Dead Space 2It's true and I thought about this a bit.
