Purely for Multiplayer is definitely Quake. Doom is fun, but quakes MP can be just down right addicting.

I only like the earlier versions of the games. Quake 2 probably comes in first place followed by the original Doom and Doom2.

Both games are really good. Doom has a great single player campaign and Quake has a really fast multiplayer. I remember Quake being the Crysis of the day, it made my 486 beg for mercy.

It's such a hard decision I think i'd go for Doom for Single player and Quake for multiplayer. Doom's multiplayer isn't really that great and I never really got into it anyway. Quake looks half finished and that's because it is, ID ran out of time and had to release it. Single player is quite good but multiplayer wiped the floor with everything, there was even bots available (Reaper bot FTW!).

Doom. I loved (and still love) the monsters, levels and the feel of the weapons. Even the graphics still have their charm. Single player was so addictive and multiplayer was lots of fun too.

Quake. I was gobsmacked at the visuals that the first game produced (what was it like, the first true 3d game?), and Quake II followed up soundly, and I was thoroughly impressed with it. I still play Quake III to this day. It's one of my favourite games of all time. Probably my most played game of all time too.

um ......back in the 90s id give doom1 and 2 tied with quake 2. never played much multiplayer so i liked dooms campaign.

as for their recent counterparts. doom3 and quake were both abominations.generic fps nonsense with only graphics to boast about. but even then doom3 is better than quake 4. atleast doom3 was fun for a while. both are shallow shadows of their former selves.

Doom 1 > Quake 1 (technically, Doom 1 > all)

Doom 2 > Quake 2

Quake 3 > Doom 3

I have nothing to compare Quake 4 to, but I'd say it's slightly better than Doom 3.

Doom is King of PC-land. But Doom 3, Doom's son who's a bit y'know, is not going to inherit the throne. He's going to accidently find himself on the business end of a BFG9000, and then someone will accidently pull the trigger. Total accident.

Cut the **** Doom 3 is infinitely better than Dooms 1/2, if you can't get past the nostalgia you've got some serious issues.

It's not nostalgia. I play the original Dooms almost every day - and have for over ten years. They are amazing games. On ultraviolence, with nothing but a shotgun for company, Doom I and II are insanely fast paced, hardcore killfests with barely time to breathe between swarms of demons. Circle starfing through a horde of imps and demons with fireballs, lost souls and rockets flying everywhere is one of the most satisfying experiences of my life.

Doom 3, on the other hand, is: walk down a dark corridor, enemy pops out, walk backwards while killing it, walk down a dark corrdor, enemy pops out, walk backwards while killing it, walk down a dark corridor, enemy pops out, walk backwards while killing it, walk down a dark corrdor, enemy pops out, walk backwards while killing it, walk down a dark corridor, enemy pops out, walk backwards while killing it, walk down a dark corrdor, enemy pops out, walk backwards while killing it, walk down a dark corridor, enemy pops out, walk backwards while killing it, walk down a dark corrdor, enemy pops out, walk backwards while killing it, walk down a dark corridor, enemy pops out, walk backwards while killing it, walk down a dark corrdor, enemy pops out, walk backwards while killing it, walk down a dark corridor, enemy pops out, walk backwards while killing it, walk down a dark corrdor, enemy pops out, walk backwards while killing it, walk down a dark corridor, enemy pops out, walk backwards while killing it.

Doom is a masterpiece, Doom 3 is just... mediocre. A technological masterpiece, perhaps, but still mediocre.

Doom 1/2 on nightmare is indeed an adventure...trully something only serious sam has been close to replicating. I enjoyed Doom 1/2 more than Doom 3 and I liked Quake 2/4 better than 1 and Quake 3 always will have a special place in my heart for what it was.

Doom. I know Quake is good but I've just never liked it.

Playing The Ultimate Doom and Doom II: Hell on Earth on Ultra Violence is one of the greatest gaming experiences I've had in my life.

Doom is a masterpiece, Doom 3 is just... mediocre. A technological masterpiece, perhaps, but still mediocre.mfsa

I wouldn't exactly call it "mediocre." Considering it was a "reinterpretation" of the first game I'd say its pretty good. It makes good use of anxiety and ****-your-pants monster closets. No shooter will ever be as good as Doom and Doom II... not ever, but calling Doom 3, a pretty good game mediocre is a tad harsh. Standing by itself, not in comparison with the originals, it is a great game.

I started playing Doom 3 again recently and have found that while the visual styIe holds up really well to today's standards (not only the styIe but the technical quality as well) the gameplay is kind of monotonous and tedious at times. I think one of its main flaws is that it has too many levels and recycled areas just to extend game time instead of just giving you a wild ride for 10-12 hours it draws it out into 16-18 hours just for the sake of doing so (I don't remember how long it took me to beat most of the game two years ago).

Personally i woundt have mind if doom 3 were 10 hours longer then it is now :) I never got bored in that game, just loved the atmosphere and the setting so much that ive played it 4 times trough now :)

I wouldn't say the game is mediocre but the game play is very repetitive. Open door, sneak in with torch, door slams shut, ambush, rinse and repeat.

The in game shadows and atmosphere are like nothing i'd never seen or experienced at the time. I don't think there's even an FPS that matches it in atmosphere to be honest.

The comments below are based only on SP play, but:

I love the original Doom - the graphics style is still, in my fairly design-ignorant view, a design classic, and the game has a great sense of humour ("they killed your pet rabbit").

by contrast i hated the original Quake - i was a bit of a game-addict at the time, and somehow i went all the way through, while simultaneously finding it totally charmless, even if the graphics were good for the time

by contrast, i thought Quake 2 was good for its time - i seem to recall it was one of the first games to have a mission-based approach, and i liked the sci-fi take

didn't really like Q3: arena - preferred UT by miles

Quake 4 was a blast, but only because i knew what to expect so just had a laugh playing my cheaply-purchased e-bay copy

Doom 3 - i've not played but again picked up cheap on e-bay and i'm looking forward to playing, because again my expectations aren't too high and I'll just play in the dark with the sound whacked up and 'enjoy' the scary monsters - if i do enjoy it i'll even get the expansion pack...

If i had to pick one game though, the original Doom wins through - it was pretty much the first of its kind, and it's a classic - end of...
