I agree. The level design is actually clever. The levels are designed to aid in the gameplay. Traps, puzzles, key cards, secrets, these are all level design principles that are lost in the vast majority of today's shooters, but they are exmplified in Doom.

i just love how doom needed little story explanation. you had no idea who or where you were. you were just a man fighting for his life against hells army. todays shooters just dont have the same feel that doom did. each level was different, with multiple non linear ways to complete your objective.

You know next time the IDSoftware package on Steam currently $69, goes on sale during the Easter/Spring Sale, I am more than likely gonna grab it, I want to play all those old Doom, Quake, and Hexen games again.

It's hilarious how Doom 3 is more similar to Quake than to the original Doom.

I miss Doom shooters too. The evil vibe, tons (tonnes? Argh!) of monsters, creative level and enemy design, chainsaws, secret locations.

Yeah i do as well. Plus Doom had that mass onslaught fighting for your life feeling quite often. I remember making my PS1 crash i had so many characters on screen fighting. Screen went to bars of colour and it said colour overload lol

It use to scare me as well! Then i got the PC version which is so so much better. Had the guys who shoot flames at you on it!

doom is one of my favorite games of all time. I've beaten doom 1, 2, final doom, doom 64, Ultimate doom, Doom absolution, and the xbox versions plus the extra levels, the iphone app turn based game, doom 3 and the expansion. If i've missed any to list i have completed it but just couldn't think of it at the time.

I've also beaten the mod based fan versions or plenty of extra levels.

Honestly no first person shooters can really keep me hooked like doom can.

You won't find level design as intricate as Doom with first-person shooters.

If Warsow had a North American community I'd be *all over* that thing. Even watched the 0.7 beta finals, they were great.

I'll never understand the appeal of those kind of arena shooters....it's like they just run around and jump and attack exactly the same way every time.... seems too repetitive.

Doom 1, yeah. I agree. But then Quake came out and Doom became second rate.
