It was a rts in the late 90s where the units where robots. Most the ground robots had crab legs and dual weapons. The builders had wheels. there was a high powered ground unit that looked like a gorilla bot. and all the planes looked like insects (mostly bees). what set this game apart was the ability to take individual control of each unit like you where in a third person game.

Ive been trying to find this game but i can't think of the name.

sounds like the original comand and conquer game with the little robots and bee like aircraft it was the best RTS of its time just over age of empires if you ask me i cant think of any other modernsetting RTS games of that time so command and conquer is probably the one

The only game I can think of that had an rts and first person view component was Battlezone 2 which came out on the PC in 2000 (about your time scale too). Have a look around google for info on Battlezone 2 and see if that is the game you are on about.

The game you describe is Machines.

I remember I spent some time looking for a retail copy back then but never did manage to dig one up. The demo was kind of lacklustre but there was something about the concept that kept the interest up.
