people still play Battlefield 2142, and probably battlefield 2 too. i would pick up battlefield 2 if i were you, because it's cheaper and personally i like that it has realistic weapons and vechicles more then the futuristic stuff that Battlefield 2142 has. Battlefield 2142 also uses the same grphics engine as Battlefield 2, so graphically there about the same.

BF 2 online is dated.

COD4 has a stonger online community by along shot.
How is it stronger? By it being out for a shorter time, that means most players are just "passing by", you'll be sure to find many more immature players in that regard. BF2 on the otherhand would have a more dedicated fanbase considering they've stuck around longer.
Unfortunately, both BF2 and BF2142 have become the home of the hack and cheat crowd. Unless you can find a group that strictly cracks down on its members that use hacks and cheats, I would avoid all the BF games altogether. When each of these games were first put out they were a lot of fun to play....before the cheating and hacks got hold of them. Now they are pretty much hit-and-miss depending upon who's playing. Frankly, BF2 is probably one of the more hacked games of the two but BF2142 is close behind.
i ma pretty sure people still play both. i am trying to get 2142 becuase for battlefield 2 wont run on my machine once iinstall the patches. i thinck becuase i have windows seven
Plenty of people still play BF2. In fact I'm going to a LAN party this weekend round my friend's where a bunch of us go online together. Don't get me wrong it's an old game and looks old now but is still fun and will run on most PC's so is a good filler until BC2 comes out.
get BF2 fo sho, then dl the PR mod for it and lay some IED's on some bridges for the nice infidels to walk over(BOOM!) and then get in your explosive car, crank the jarjar music and go jihad into a tank:} no other game like it
