We have probably had something like this before, but I just want to know what everyones opinion is.

If you like Deus Ex or Half life or System shock 2 the best

My opinion is that System Shock 2 is the best. In my opinion. :)

Well, my favorite game of the three is Deus Ex. My next favorite would be Half-Life. And my least favorite of the three would be System Shock 2. All excellent games.

Half-Life. The other two don't deserve to be in the same sentence as Half-Life.

The only correct answer.

Half-Life. The other two don't deserve to be in the same sentence as Half-Life.

Apples, oranges, and elephants.

Exactly, and each one of the posters will simply pick their favorite, which is normal.

  • Half Life is easier to get into because its mainly a FPS with perfect controls, its one of the first "modern" FPS's, and i love it. Despite having a .. "story", i wouldn't even call it that, but afterall that's not why i love it. Now add its expansions, Blue Shift & Opposing Force, and you got a weed game that's addicting beyond age.
  • Deus Ex is harder to get into because of the clunky FPS mechanics & bad AI, but that's simply because its NOT comparable to a FPS, you can finish it as a FPS, but you'll be missing out big time. It's more of a cyberpunk Stealth/RPG with loose FPS elements in it. I absolutely love its conspiracy story, characters, cyberpunk atmosphere. Overall, fantastic game.
  • System Shock is my favorite in terms of that perfect atmoshere, its almost like a horror game at times, i know it scared me wen i played it, and its story is great, the twist(the one's that played it knows what i'm talking about), first time i played it, was legend. It's also a hella lot superiour to Bioshock, except for the obvious visuals.

As one that loves them, and played & re-played them all, i simply can't choose.

If i want a perfect FPS, i'll play HL & its expansions; if i want a perfect Cyberpunk dystopian Stealth/RPG game, i'll play Deus Ex & its mods; If i want a atmospheric Horror/FPS/RPG game, i'll play System Shock 2.

Honestly, they cannot be compared. Its simply a matter of preferance, what you like, i would say.

2 of them are RPGs. What are we comparing? HL destroys both of those others in terms of standard FPS mechanics like combat. I've played a fair bit of SS2. Not all of it but enough to decide that its my least favourite out of the three. It has that very bland/sterile feel to a lot of its areas. There's some key searching etc. DX is still my benchmark for how a RPG should feel and play though in terms of stats and balancing. Its a very smartly thought out game. Some brilliant level design.

@Lucianu: Exactly. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Gameplay: Half-Life

Story: Deus Ex

Atmosphere: System Shock 2 (with Half-Life a close 2nd)

(Didn't say I wouldn't try though. :))

Lucianu has said it best. These and many other great games are the reason there is no #1 game in the world. I loved all of these games with a real passion that comes along, just not very often.

I've always contended that you can compare 3 different games by giving the nod to the game that was the best overall gaming experience.

So to me you CAN give an answer.

I have never been able to get SS2 to work on my Vista PC, I made the mistake of buying SS2 in '99 and never getting around to play it :( (I snoozed and I lost).

However, Personally, I did like Bioshock slightly better than original HL (which has aged very poorly) and Deus Ex.

Indeed, they are all FPS's anyway. You can compare them.

But GC's Metroid Prime beats all 3, you with me on that topgun?

I'm a PC Gamer first and foremost, but Metroid Prime is a Masterpiece of gaming, IMO the best game of the last decade.

The three games differ from one another in significant ways, so comparing them is like comparing apples and burgers. However, out of all the three games, only Half Life managed to develop into an excellent franchise. Deus Ex IW was a pale shadow of Deus Ex, and both Bioshock 1 and 2 aren't even within shouting distance of the quality of SS2 The various Deux Ex developers pretty much cratered and sunk what could have become a truly great gaming franchise.

The original Bioshock is a Masterpiece, though, as I have said, i haven't played SS2 to say how well they stack up together.

I've never played SS2 and I couldn't really get into Deus Ex much, as I'm not a fan of stealth games at all. In this case Half-Life would be the winner.

Deus Ex; it's impossible to define exactly what kind of game it is and that's the beauty of it because it can be whatever you want it to be. I can completely ignore the skill system, I can completely ignore the guns, I can just about ignore the items, period. It appeals to almost any kind of player.

System Shock 2 is the greatest game ever made.

Excellent story, scary, great atmosphere, unparalleled immersion and some of the best audio in a game ever.

It virtually invented the FPS RPG hybrid.

I would love to see this game graphics updated to modern standards.

Another beauty of a game was the original Thief.

I believe both SS2 and Thief were based on the same engine and produced by Looking Glass Studios.

From what I've heard, Deus Ex is basically the child of Half Life and System Shock 2... but I've never played SS2.
