Get Intel if you overclock (e6400)

if stock, get AMD.

AMD is more expensive than e6420, but if you can find e6400 your good. I can't.

E6420 is better than the E6400.

With the E6420, the difference between the AMD CPU and Intel CPU becomes so close, it's pretty hard to call. However, the E6420 overclocks A LOT better than the 5600+ and runs cooler than the 5600+.

E6420 gets my vote.

Even though he most likely won't be overclocking you still tell him to go for the E6420/E6400? Lol..

The Core 2 Duos really don't run that much cooler than the X2s.. or use that much less energy really.

AMD Athlon64 X2 5600+ is better.

yes everyone says that C2D is faster than X2, tis tru AMD is the underdog but later AMD will catch and bite C2D's ass, but for know C2D is dominating.

The extra cache really helps that E6420, especially in multimedia tasks and to an extent, games.

65w TDP (C2D) verses the 90w TDP (5600+ IIRC). That's pretty significant. The Pentium 4s and Pentium Ds were at around 90-120w regarding TDP figures, and everyone was complaining about them.

Also, a socket LGA775 mobo provides a cheap upgrade path to quad core. By July 22nd, the Q6600 will fall to a wholesale price of $266--and I can assure you that Barcelona won't be so cheap, let alone be out any time soon.

The extra cache doesn't help it that much. In gaming it's like a 2-5% performance increase.

As for energy consumption, even if the X2s have a higher TDP.. most people don't have the processor under full load 24/7. Thus, the processor's idle energy consumption becomes more important. In this aspect, AMD's Cool'n'Quiet is far more efficient than Intel's SpeedStep. =]

True, he could upgrade to a quad-core in July if he went Core 2... but if he plans to upgrade (does he even know about July 22nd?) then he should go with a low-end Socket LGA775 processor like an E4300 or even a Pentium D.

Phenom should be released between Q3'07 - Q4'07, I don't think the prices will be too insane (like the Athlon X2s when they were released) =/
