Hi

so in some games my CPU hits 100% and causes massive fps drop.

i5 9600k

gtx 1080

3200 16gb ram

ssd

nothing overclocked, windows 10 with not much stuff going in the background

Could I possibly have a defective CPU?

Sounds like your cpu is getting hot and throttling. Case clean?

Is that max or idle? Big difference. :)

@PfizersaurusRex:

Max

When something cpu invasive happens (explosions and etc), cpu hits 100% for a second, causes fps to drop 80% which is weird for an i5 9600k and a gtx 1080. I get around 80-90fps maxed out everything at 1440p

I know GTA V can be demanding of the CPU and it is not surprising. The older FarCry games were not optimized well for multi threading. So, check if there is a single thread that is being maxed out. I have not played COD MW or Hitman, so I can't comment on those. The best thing to do is monitor the usage while playing and see what is going on when you are getting the frame rate dips. 9600K is a good CPU, but it may very well be a bottleneck in some situations and prevent the high frame rates that you desire.

What apps do you suggest for monitoring? I use task manager, cpu is the only one getting hammered in some situations lol

I use MSI Afterburner. There are a lot of things that you can monitor with it. You can also set what you want to appear in the OSD (On Screen Display) overlay. That way you can monitor in real-time without having to alt-tab or have the graphs open on a second monitor.

@Hydrolex: update windows, bios and drivers.

Some games are CPU heavy / some graphics settings can be CPU demanding.

Try lowering the graphics in GTA5 - I'm using i5 4690 and GTX970 and I had to lower graphics to medium to enjoy always 60fps.
