www.mmorpg.com

www.onrpg.com

The Purpose of this thread is purely to discuss and recomend free mmorpgs so any of us hovering in between games can try to find something to pass the time while we wait for our next big title (or pay package :P). I know there are hundreds of free korean ones, but please try to reccomend ones with more than 1000 english speaking players

-Please add to this thread and I will update this list to include the title and any description of the game you provide. If you know of one worth playing please provide details and try to describe the gameplay (grinding etc) and which games it resembles.

-Please don’t flame my and other users opinions. everything not within quotation marks is my own opinion of the game and I have tried not to criticise the games unfairly. It's not that I don't want to be flamed but I want to keep it on topic and concise ( and pretty comprehensive).

-Please don’t list betas that will end within 1 month. Well you can if you want but i was hoping for freeware or things that will be free for a length of time

--- Maple Story Online:http://www.mapleglobal.com/

screenshots on the site navigation

client is ~210MB including patches

"You can explore a totally new and unknown world you have never been to, put on beautiful clothes and gorgeous accessories, and even attract other users in the process. You may begin the journey to explore the world of unknown alone, but you may come out on the other end with numerous new friends through hunting and chatting. If you're tired of hunting and competition, how about playing minigames with a friend for a change?"

A very simple game, both in looks and gameplay. It really is like playing a mmorpg of zelda crossed with mario... with chatrooms or something thrown in. But combat, controls and character progression aren't that deep and I suspect this would ultimately leave it unrewarding.

--- Face of Mankind: http://www.fomportal.com

screenshots: http://www.fomportal.com/?page=screenshots.php&lang=en§ion=3&screenshotoffset=40&picture=3

client download: http://www.fomportal.com/?page=client_download.php&lang=en§ion=3

or

http://www.fileshack.com/file_download.x?fid=6198 (765MB)

"This MMORPG uses the first ever player-generated mission system, and combines it with sophisticated economics and complex player politics for a new kind of online experience. Only your ability to shoot, bargain, politic and otherwise duck and deal will advance your character’s private or corporate agenda. The success of each and every mission will determine your rise to the top, or your fall into obscurity. Whatever path you take in this astonishing world, plan well: one day, one minute or a single second could bring you to your destiny as the true Face of Mankind."

A very interesting sounding rpg that includes gameplay of fps and rpg style and a large city background, somewhat resembling bladerunner/anachronox. The exp gaining and so on is predominantly based around the quests/duties set by other players... and if you don't like your duties then you can just find ways of exceeding the rank of your boss and give whatever duties spring to your mind... I think the game masters have been known to step in and create more productive missions.

--- Kal Online: http://www.kalonline.com**Worth a Download** (in my opinion)

"KAL Online , a FULL 3D MMORPG, brings a new genre of Oriental Fantasy to the players.KAL Onlinehas oriental sentiment and culture in a fantasy world. Most current games based on western fantasy, Sciece Fiction, etc.but KAL Online can make the players to have a new experience. The story of KAL-Online is based on oriental myth about the 74th war between "Ha-Nin", the great king and “Ban-Go” who challenged to the king with troops of demon.‘KAL-Online’ will be a model of oriental fantasy game ; it represents the oriental sentiment well."

Quite a good looking game... considering its free. I think it looks like a suped-up version of Knight Online. However there are only 3 classes and apparently it's not hard to find a "carbon copy" of yourself running the other way in the street. This is a good quality game for a free mmorpg and a lot of people reccomend it.

--- Knight Online: http://www.knight-online.com

screenshots: http://www.knight-online.com.my/screenshot02.asp

client: http://www.knight-online.com.my/client.asp. 285MB

"The minute you acquaint yourself with the white clouds and the eagles in the sky, you’ll find yourself caught in the charm of a true 3D online game. Knight Online is the firsr game to successfully introdyce the "Party System"in Korea. Raising your character’s level, acquiring new items, and becoming the strongest player should not be all that an online game has to offer. We invite you to the World of Knight Online, where you’ll find a player with better game manners may become more respected than a player with expensive items; in a party system where you help your fellow
players to advance. A prominent and exciting feature of Knight Online is the involving, persistent, large-scale war between players."

You may be forgiven for thinking the game looks drab from the screenshots and indeed the terrain did seem rather dull. Two races to choose from, each race has 3 sup-species and each sup-epecies has a limited selection of classes it can choose ( 4 classes in total). Leveling involves a lot of grinding and there are issues with there not being many english speaking players. It plays much like a standard 3D 3rd person mmorpg, if I can call it that and the interface and class skills work quite well.

I would reccomend you try Kal Online first as its somewhat of a suped-up version of Knight Online.

--- R.O.S.E Online (Rush on Seven Episodes)http://www.roseon.com**Worth a Download** (in my opinion)

screenshots: http://www.roseon.com/Community/UserSShot.asp

Client: http://www.roseon.com/Pds/Down.asp (zip and exe both ~365MB) VERY VERY SLOW DOWNLOAD (in my experience) get a download manager like getright, but DONT use any download accelerator functions as this may corrupt the file (that's what happened for me with Ragnarok Online)

"The ultimate goal of R.O.S.E Online is to learn more your role as a Visitor, and take an active part in the world of R.O.S.E Online as the main story unfolds. Depending on your discoveries and actions, you may either play an involved role in the main story, or have your own adventures."

"Players can form groups and compete for dominion over the seven planets. Unlike a small scale war, such as a guild war in which players fight for the possession of castles, players can take part in a huge war in which the fate of an entire planet is at stake."

"Every change in the game, such as Item price, monster spawn rate, MVP monster spawn rate or the weather, is dramatically influenced by the actions of the users. Every major event that occurs on the 7 planets is recorded on the official website. The names of characters that played key roles in these events are displayed on the official website so that they may receiverecognition as legends."

Everybody should try this game. It's very... endearing.... very cutesie.... and quite fun. It feels like playing a mmorpg of Kingdom Hearts or Dark Chronicles and although it may seem quite immature to some players..... I really quite enjoy playing this game :) The game does require more or less the same specs as Halo Combat evolved... so anything newer than 1 and a half years old should be able to handle it. If anyone was quite interested in ragnarok online... but couldn't quite bear the poor graphics, then this is the game for you. It features 4 basic jobs and each of these can then branch off into 1 of 2 advanced jobs. A job system in any game is always a bonus for me (FFtactics and Vandal Hearts I were cool cuz of this feature).

The game will take quite a while to download as the client download seems to be hosted on hamster powered wooden modems... but get a downloadmanager and just leave it downloading at 5kbs or whatever while you play some other game and it should be done within 5 days. The game is level based and gaining xp is achieved predominantly through grinding... though there are some quests and the ones that don't involve hunting monsters are well designed cutesie little quests like going off to get ingredients for a poison cure and coming back and giving the antidote to the villagers in teh starting village. The quests are rather basic and maybe immature and cutesie compared to say the instance quests in WoW... but they are quaint and add to the feel of the game/

This is an open beta however (the game will be p2p eventually... but that is 1 year + away) and unless I am seriously mistaken, this will be one of the next big mmorpgs of the future (probably bigger than Ragnarok Online... so maybe 1-1.5 million players wouldn't be a crazy guess)

--- Dofuswww.dofus.com

An excellent flash mmorpg... .Its easy to set up and it only has a small (30mb) download you can be playing in little time.with 11 unique classes and lush colourful cartoon backgrounds from a 2d isometric perspective...you might as well give it a go.

Navy Field www.navyfield.com

This is a navy simulation rpg, that plays kinda like a RTS, except you only have one boat and nothing to build. Basically, you're on a team with a bunch of other ships against another team (battles can get huge.. 150+ ships) and you drive around and aim your guns/torpedos and shoot the other team. You earn EXP and money for battles. Exp levels up your sailors (you recruit lots) and then gives you access to new guns, torpedos, and ships. You can be any one of 4 nations (US, Japan, Britain, Germany) and each nation has tons of exclusive ships. you start off as a neutral ship, and then upgrade to better types of ships once you pick a country. eventually, you get super powerful ships like heavy cruisers, aircraft carriers, and battleships. Super addicting.. only real downside is that there is no window mode

--- Shattered Galaxy

It's like StarCraft meets Ultima Online. You basically buy a bunch of different untis that you can then fight in a persistant war against other factions on the same planet as you. The learning curve is high because you can do so much customization with the equipment that your units use. Correctly distributing stat points among your four attributes is also pretty important if you plan on playing the game for along time.

--- MU Onlinehttp://www.muonline.com

screenshots (or on official site)

"MU, a 3D online game produced by Webzen is a full on 3D MMORPG that is the first of its kind developed in Korea. MU is a highly involved fantasy Role Playing Game based on the legendary Continent of MU. You are given the choice of selecting between one of four classes, Dark Knight, Fairy, Dark Sorcerer and Magic Gladiator, and become a daring adventurer in the quest to save the land of MU. The beautiful surroundings made in full and glorious 3D was once unheard of and hardly imaginable but with the ingenious implementation of the Open GL Full 3D Engine technology developed by Webzen makes the impossible possible. What lies behind the legends and mysteries of MU? Let the journey begin!"

Quite old, but a lot of people rate this as their favourite free mmorpg.

--- Conquer Online: http://www.conqueronline.com/

screenshots: http://www.conqueronline.com/screenshot/screenshot1.htm

client is ~490MB

"The game's finely drawn 2D background and advanced 3D effect brings your character and its surroundings to life. Our sophisticated equipment system offers exotic ancient weaponry. Each is designed with its own customized motions. There are any treasured gems waiting to be found. Once possessed, they will grant unimaginable power to its owner. Surely, this marvelous MMOG has conquered the hearts of millions of players."

4 playable classes, max level 120. Characters can be "reborn" to a new class to keep some of the strengths of their old classes (not all abilities however) and so they can customise their characters further. The style of graphics and character moves resemble eastern ninja/martial arts crossed with japanese manga rpgs (grandia etc) and I really liked the style of animation. It has to be said the game is fun at first and resembles D2 in that leveling yourself is very quick, but also gets monotonous very quickly once things slow down. The game actually rewards high level players for powerleveling newbies via a virtue point system. The game is somewhat MMORPG-lite and is best enjoyed if you have a group of friends wanting to play online (at no cost), so that they can powerlevel eachother and get down to the fun of pvp and guild pvp. Leveling is grind-heavy with a few limited quests "find this gem/mine for this gem and give it to me for reward/ class improvements etc" seems to be the gist of it.

This game isn't deep, the backgrounds are poor and the character customisation leaves a lot to be desired... that said it might eb good for a blast if you want to get powereleveled to a high level and start pking :P

--- Skyblade: Sword of Heaven: http://www.skyblade.com.ph/

screenshots: http://www.skyblade.com.ph/gallery_screenshots.asp

Clients: http://www.filemirrors.com/search.src?type=begins&file=skyblade (not working AFAICT)

"SkyBlade Sword of the Heavens is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game based on the popular Korean manga Pachun Il Gum. The game is set on the backdrop of an oriental-fantasy universe allowing players to explore the Jijon Universe - a cosmos comprising of planets ruled by vicious animal rulers based on ancient oriental myths. The characters play the role of martial art warriors all vying for the greatest destiny - to become the Jijon King, the absolute and most powerful ruler of all worlds.

There are 8 types of characters to choose from, each of them with their own unique sets of innate abilities and skills. Furthermore, these characters can perform varied and extraordinary skills - among of which are flying, jumping, meditation(recovery skill), teleportation and summoning of monsters."

The client download from the site does not appear to work. I would apreciate any feedback and file mirrors.

--- Pristontale: http://eng.pristontale.com/

screenshots are on the site navigation

(also see: http://sperone.free.fr/screenshots.htm)

client is ~740 MB, torrent available

"Priston Tale is a Full-3D MMORPG (Massively Multi-player Online Role-Playing Game) based on the players’ adventures in the continent of Priston. The 3D environment allows detailed character models and actual differences in height, making the whole experience much like watching an animated movie.

The free-floating camera also allows a whole 360 degrees of camera movement, and the combat sequences boasts explosive action and effects to bring arcade- level fun to the player. To top it all, the addition of a Class Change system will effectively break the "leveling" monotony of typical MMORPGs by giving players the freedom of choosing the paths by which their characters will grow."

Another manga/ japanese RPG style MMORPG, like R.O.S.E this also apears to resemble a more 3D Ragnarok Online and it reminded me very much of some of the ps1/ps2 rpg. 8 playable classes (2 races, 4 exclusives to each one).

I played the game a year or so ago and the game did not endear itself to me due to the fact that it turns out to be somewhat of a grind-fest and I spoke to some players who were high level grinding of mobs in the same area as me and they said that they got good exp this way and they’ve been here all week. I’m willing to give this a second go but I feel I will end up uninstalling after the first night.

---Supreme Destinyhttp://www.supremedestiny.com.my

download

screenshots

For too long you have waited. For too long you have pondered the significance of your life. For too long you have questioned your reason for existence. For too long you have sat alone in the dark, waiting for a cause that is worth your while to come by.

This is it.

This is your chance. Your one in a lifetime opportunity to answer to your true calling. It is there, waiting for you, right here and right now. The very source of hope itself. The seed of humble beginnings that will branch out into a stemma of tales about a hero’s journey. Your journey.

Will you finally become a renowned hero? Ascend to join the ranks of the gods and goddesses themselves? Or will you die trying? Only you will know. Only you can walk the path of your ultimate fate.

Do yourself a favour. Answer to your true calling. Seek your Supreme Destiny.

4 character classes (knight, mage and 2 cool looking classes: Beast Master and Huntress). You can ride mounts and the game looks ok

--- Planeshift: http://www.planeshift.it/

screenshots: http://www.planeshift.it/pics.html

client: http://www.planeshift.it/download.html torrent available, they request that you first try downloading via torrent to save their webspace, I feel I have to recommend you do so seeing as they a providing a free service to players.

The objective of the PlaneShift Team is to create a virtual fantasy world in which a player can start as a peasant in search of fame and become a hero. We will focus our efforts in the reproduction of a real world with politics, economy, many non-player-characters controlled by the server that will bring to life our world even without players connected! e want to give FREE access to everyone, without the need to either purchase the game or pay a monthly fee. Servers and bandwidth will be donated by sponsors. Our virtual world is persistent, and this means you can connect to it at every hour of day or night and you will always find players and npcs wandering our realms. You will be able to disconnect and reconnect again, the server saves the actual status of your character including his possessions.”

I have nothing to say about this game as I know nothing about this game and it took me completely by surprise. As far as I know there is no release date yet for this game. It is still in a development phase, and since it is a free game chances are they will always be adding new things to the game.

Good looking game, but I think the english servers are broke :( check the forums on the site. Apparently this registration is down and the game is laggy =[ not to promising

--- Tibia: Tibia Homepage
Need to make account. Free to play. Premium accounts can be paid for monthly for some extra ingame stuff. 2D MMO based in the fantasy world of Tibia. New players start out in rookguaard and as they gain levels they can move on the the mainland of Tibia. Very fun little game to pass time i played it for a couple years. Has thousands of players. Has 56 game worlds to play. There are 4 classes; Paladin , Druid , Sorcerer, Knight. You can join guilds and wage war with others. There are Open PvP servers and Non PvP servers
Screenshots page
Also the game is 6mb and is 56k friendly.
Hope this helps you.

--- Runescape: http://www.runescape.com/

Free browser based MMORPG

Does exactly what it says on the tin.

---Dark Eden http://en.darkeden.com/

Play a vampire or a slayer. Choose your race, gender, and appearance. This is a horror RPG - something like Runescape but much more violent.

Site is not terribly well translated so I assume the interface/npcs would suffer similarly, still the one person I’ve found who has played the game said it was worth playing and got better after the first day or so of playing.

---Diskworld MUD - http://discworld.atuin.net/external/java/newtelnet/client_help.shtml

stuntman_hy wrote: A lot of people might not like it because it is a text-based game but I think its the best mmorpg out there. It is based on the Terry Pratchet novels and includes many of the characters. When you first create your account you will start in the newbie area where you can buy weapons and train your fighting skill. When you have completed a certain quest you are ready to leave the newbie area and set out into the Discworld which is huge. There are 3 main cities: Ankh-Morpork, Bes-Perlargic and djelibeybi. There are also about 20-30 other citys and villages and more are still being created. The first thing you would want to do when enter the discworld is join a guild. You can become a Thief, Assassin, Warrior, a Witch, a Wizard or a Priest each with thier own advantages and dis-advantages. Other features included in the game are: Language learning (about 5 different languages so far), Player houses and shops, Banks and vaults, Prisons and much, much more.

Please add any glaringly obvious ones I missed.

u wudda killed me for missing out runscapre rite? :P)

+++ Gunz: The Duelwww.gunzonline.com***** worth a download ***** NOT A MMORPG its a 3rd person multplayer shoot/slash em up and its great fun ******

********* client is only 145MB ***********

"We believe sometimes you dream of becoming the cool character or hero that you saw in a movie, animation or a game. GunZ is an online game that was produced out the idea of enabling you to realize such a dream! GunZ is not simply a simulation game of a gun fight. It allows you to imitate a famous hero, create your own fashion, and perform a number of different actions such as shooting or stabbing while running or jumping on the walls. What makes GunZ more interesting than other games is the fact that the game is available on-line allowing easy access to its exciting elements! AND this game is FREE for playing."

Devil May Cry meets the matrix in a mmo!. its a swordfighting + Gun wall walking somersault fighting level up fps game.

Some guy on onrpg.com wrote:

selling point is the fact that it has non-stop action with Matrix and john woo moves combined. That is half true. There are some wicked moves you can pull off in the game, but it can take a while too learn...Before I get ahead of myself, letme go back....
First off, you start by creating a character. The
character customization isn't much...in fact it has only a couple of faces and hair types. However, the game promises that you'll be able to customize your character to your exact specifications because of the 1000 items available in the game. The job system is weird, and unfortunately, there's not alot of info on how they differ other than the starting weapons. However, it's not going to stop you from playing. Very much like JK2, you start out in a lobby where you choose a game. Once you get in there, you're inside the waiting room. If the game has already started, you must choose the intrusion option, which allows you to connect to the game mid-session. Or, you have to press ready, or start(depending on if you're a server master) to start it up. There are a couple of game types, but the most popular is Deathmatch. This is where the game shines it .45 mm barrel down into our eyes. If you've played any FPS, then you'll feel right at home(other than the fact it's in 3rd person view). The controls are simple, and they allow for quick death instilling quickness and deadliness to be in some of the most newbiest of newbs. You have a few choice weapons that you start out with, but when you get more kills, not only do you get EXP to level up, but you also get the game's currency, "bounty". The more bounty you have, the more weapons and armor you can get...or, if not armor, try getting stylish looking clothes,.
The action is fast paced, and it nevers lets up. One moment you could be walking, trying to find an enemy....next you can find yourself in the cross fire of a fire fight. Stradegy is a big element of the game because some of the players might have bigger and better weapons then you, so you got to use your smarts to devolope a plan to take these people down. Some game types allow you to respawn as much as you want until the game limit is hit. Others only let you respawn 1 time, so make those shots count.
In the end, GunZ proves to be an awesome game that can really be a good time killer(for those who don't like it much), and if you do take a liking to it, you'll start to get addicted to it....
So, if you're looking for a cool action game, then this is it....

Try and simplify the layout. Use less caps for one becuase it's anoying to read it. Use different colours, fonts etc too. Maybe Fiddlecub could help you, or another mod.

This thread is awesome. Nice work. :D

Maybe you put it on your list, and I didn't see it, but Knight Online is an awesome MMORPG. It's 100% free, and fully 3D. There's a pretty large community as well, so that isn't much of a problem. It gets a little boring after a while, but for a free game, what can you expect? :P

Doesn't worth trying anyway. Knight Online plays like as if it was some really early versions of MMO's.
Besides, there's not much English-speaking ppl.

yeah but they are free :) thats the main reason I try not to flame freeware... also some of the companies must be spending big bucks (or their sponsors) on webspace/bandwidth. obviously I realise the graphics and other aspects suffer but as Ultima online and fallouts showed... really bad graphics don't always ruin the gameplay. And obviously the game designers and teams behind these games have brought their design concepts of a mmorpg to life.

thanks for reminding me of knight online.... shoulda mentioned it since i played in the beta: I was sure I heard some news somewhere that beta was over and you had to p2p.

Tibia
To play Tibia you need to make an account. The game is free to play for all. You can also pay for a premium account that gives you access to extra in game areas and items. Tibia is a 2D MMO. The game has thirty thousand plus players at peak times. The game is 6mb and is 56k friendly. New players start out on the island rookguaard where they can learn the basics of the game and can move on to the mainland of tibia when it is there time to leave or you can stay on the isle to help other new players. There are four classes Paladin, Druid, Knight and Sorcerer. There are many quests small and epic and you can join guilds and wage war with others. The game has PVP servers along with Non PVP servers.

Game: Furcadia
Desc: A 2D role-players' haven. This isn't based on character advancement whatsoever, it's mostly just like a visual chatroom in user-created buildings and emphasized on role-playing. If you like casual chat, they have that too, but role-players especially like this game for the options that it has.

I used to play this all the time a year or two back. Mostly the most popular thing there is anime, but they have other stuff there, too.

I would like to address one of my favorite free MMORPG's, Dark Side of Mu. ( http://darkside.lunarpages.com/portal/index.php ) To those of you familiar with Mu Online or even Diablo (because the two are very similar) this will be well worth your time. It is a Mu private server with a large fanbase and very active Admins to prevent cheating and resolve problems. Im not sure the exact numbers, but the drop rates and exp rates are much higher than that of Mu Online. The Dark Side gaming network also has a Dark Side of World or Warcraft, and Dark Side of Lineage 2.

I have to say, I recently tried Planeshift and it's pretty abysmal. Granted, it's in early stages, but the game doesn't feel like it's going anywhere. I can't say it'd really deserve to be called worth-playing, at least not for another year or so.

And Axx... I'm not sure about the MU version, but I know that playing World of Warcraft on a free server is illegal (says so in the EULA).

Runescape

Homepage: http://www.runescape.com

Screenshots: http://www.runescape.com/aff/runescape/screenshots/screenshots.html

Game Information:

It's a Java-based MMORPG, meaning all you need to play is a semi-decent connection and Java. It looks pretty good for a Java game, but the graphics aren't the best. There are plenty of skills to level up and you can create practically everything on your own (for the most part). It's mostly about individual combat, you can team up with a friend to go to the PVP area known as the Wilderness but other than that you're practically on your own. There are around 22 Free quests, and a ton of Free servers.

If you pay Five dollars a month, you can get a Membership account that unlocks more skills for you to work with (such as Thievery and Herblore, working with herbs to make potions). And you get like at least fifty more quests.

I don't know, it's definitely worth checking out.

Just ran into this thread. So what! Anybody here knows MU? Well thats the best free MMO. I'll give you a little help. MU online. Homepage: http://www.muonline.com Game: It's FULL 3D game! To play it you just have to download client on site (~160 MB) and register. In game there are multiple servers and when you connect to one you get thrown in world of MU. Games about your character and you building it - you kill monsters, gain expa, money, buy armors and weapons and compete with other players. You can join player guilds and take place in giant player battles or you can just simply kill monsters and advance further than anybody. In game there are 100s of armors, weapons, shields, skills, spells, monsters and other things which will make you wanna play this game for at least few years. P.S. There are very many private servers around world (MU Dream, MU Best, MU King etc. in every country) so you can nver get bored because each server has it's own rules, maps and things...

Nope, it's still free, though I heard that for premium content (extras, the usual stuff) you pay. Oh, I also heard about some MMO called Realm Wars, dunno too much about it except it had decent graphics and that it's free.

I think your computer can't comphrehend the list or the website had an error. I suggest you try again.

Lawl. It actually doesn't crash the computer, it merely overloads it by displaying a huge image (I think). I was able to close the website without having to do anything else. Bad job.

Oh, and it does something with AIM, but I don't have aim, so I wouldn't know.

Just so it is clear, that kind of behavior is not tolerated, and the user has been banned. If anyone else wants to be clever by linking malicious code in their signature or posts--well--think again.

Now, back to our regularly-scheduled MMO programming :)

It's a very simple MMO, but if you're done with school and you're not going anywhere on vacation, it can entertain you. I think I have a level 32 and a level 28 character on there from a while ago.
