You could get a hell of a lot with that budget - good 24" monitor, 8800GTX graphics card, nForce 680i motherboard, Core 2 Quad processor, 10k RPM OS drive, 1TB storage space, Silverstone Temjin TJ09 case, PC Power & Cooling 750 quad power supply, high-quality sound card, the works.

Here's my suggestion.

http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=6660848

$2,733.11 with shipping.

I included the monitor, speakers, sound card, keyboard & mouse, Vista, and a third-party cooler for the CPU (optional of course). I originally had the Q6600 in the build, but I decided not to put it in since Intel is having a price-cut on quad-cores on July 22nd.
