I don't know much about monitors. Can it damage the display? When you touch the screen, this little "waves" happen.

Moderate pressure shouldn't damage it, but pushing really hard, or sharp object or corners can cause damage to an lcd

So it's fine just to touch the screen to show someone something?

As long as you're not putting any pressure on it. Enjoy the fingerprints though :P

Actually, my problem is: I don't touch the screen, but the people I live with love to put their fingers on the screen and I was worried that it could damage it. I have to clean that display every week because it's full of fingerprints...

It wont damage it if kids start to point on the screen and put their fingers on it but if they would use knifes then it would be another story. :P

As stated above moderate pressure canot damage it but any pressure that could damage it its either doing it on purposse or its from dropping the screen.

I have asked my family members to kindly not touch the monitor because it's pretty hard to clean off the smudges and I worry if I might damage the monitor while cleaning them as I often have to apply pressure to clean the smudges.

But rest assured normal touches on the screen wont damage anything.
