hello all. So I'm building my own computer for my first time. Some friends have helped me get the gist of how to build it. With like matching the sockets and stuff. I play fps games like CS:S and some other games, and I am getting vista because even though I heard some bad stories I know games will be requiring it later and I just want a new OS. Ok so here's my parts I am using in my comp. I am semi-confident that I've picked good components, i'd just like to hear from others. I am also planning on over-clocking some of these, and will be buying them all from newegg...

1)Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s ($69.99)

2)Graphics Card: GeForce 8600GTS 256MB PCI Express x16 OC HDCP ($219.99)

3)Motherboard: GIGABYTE (rev. 1.3) LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard ($99.99)

4)Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 Allendale 1.8GHz LGA 775 ($114.50)

5)RAM: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 ($119.99)

6)Monitor: SAMSUNG 22" 2 ms (GTG) DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1(DC 3000:1)($294.99)

7)Power Supply: Rosewill 550W SLI Ready-ATX 12V V2.01 ($69.99)

8)Logitech G11 keyboard ($55.99)

9)Logitech G7 Wireless Laser Mouse ($69.99)

10)Microsoft Windows Vista 32-Bit Ultimate ($189.99)

...and a computer case

Any obvious flaws that I should know about, and please rate 1-10. thanks

Don't get the 8600 gts, it isn't very good for gaming, instead get the 8800 gts 320 mb for about $280. It is leaps and bounds ahead of the 8600 gts and worth all the extra.

Overclockin could never bring the 8600 gts to 8800 gts levels. The 8600 has a 128 bit ring bus and the 8800 has a 320 bit ring bus. That makes a HUGE difference.

thanks for the advice. I agree, I could get a better graphics card, and yea the mouse and keyboard is alittle pricey. But why is that vista any better than the ultimate that I was going to get? why home basic? Well thanks for the post.:)

Whoa there, Home BASIC? Basic doesn't even have aero! It will look all gross... also, it doesn't have any extra stuff. Atleast get Home Premium.

yeah you definitly dont need vista ultimate, get basic and put the money you saved towards a better GFX card and PSU. the way i see it, i only want vista for DX10 games and not for any of the useless features the premium and ultimate versions include. So vista basic is the best bet for gamers imo.

Thers nothing wrong with vista... that guy prolly never had it and just went off of what everyone says "Vista! Sucks!" no it doesnt, you are not forced to buy it and Halo 2 or a DX10 card. THATS YOUR CHOICE

Since, your OCing you may want to get a good CPU cooler.  I can't recommend one because it depends on how far you plan to OC. If your going with Vista, I would recommend Home Premium 32.

my suggestion, get a motherboard with the nvidia chipset if you are getting an nvidia card. That way in a year or two you can add a second gfx card for sli goodness.

hmmm pretty good i think.  I think vista is find but keep the 2 gig if u r going to get it i have home premium and I LUV IT.  The only thing is i would recommend getting a 600 watt for the price it's worth if since ur getting a 8000 series gcard.  I am really glad ur not bottlenecking the gcard.  I have to upgrade my comp since it was a bit undersold.  Other then that i think your pretty good.
