I bought some pre-owned PC games from CEX and when I go to enter the serial key during the installation the key gets rejected. Can anybody tell me what I can do to install the games?

You will need to obtain an unused serial key to install the games

ProTip: don't buy pre-owned PC games. They require a key to activate online and if it's pre-owned then the key has already been activated. You got d'uped....

The only way is to buy those games again (legit copies).

Ha.. you got duped. You were sold worthless copies of games that no longer work. A few might work if they don't require an online registration but most likely all the games are duds. Hopefully you didn't pay to much for them.

This is CEX https://us.webuy.com/ Just looking at it, it looks incredibly sketchy.

So they're buying a used games, and sell them to other people.

So their sending you CD keys of used games, next time make sure you don't need to activate those games like account bound games: Ubi, EA, Steam, Blizzard.

I would only buy a used pc game if it was older than 2004. Even then there are some that would not work, like online games

If you buy a used PC game, you're going to have a bad time.

Anyone who doesn't know who CEX(outside the UK) are they are a massive games, DVD, electronic retailer specializes in used products and trade ins.

There is a CEX in pretty much every main city.

If you have your receipt.you could try taking it back to them.

Sounds like a crappy store if they allow the sale of used product keys.

Take them back. They have sold you a product they shouldn't be selling in the first place really. They have no grounds to refuse a full refund in cash. I wouldn't ever buy used PC games personally.

I said there a big retailer didn't say they were not crappy, your right no retailer should do that.

If the OP still has a receipt for the games, I think there is a good chance he will get his money back or at least store credit to pick something else.

Right... so Gamestop selling used games is also a crappy store, because games have those online pass things for consoles. You cant play those online.

Don't they throw in new codes so that it'll work? Over here they do if that's the case.

@soolkiki:

No US store sells used PC games, because nearly all of them require activation keys that are 1-time use. When EA and others were doing the online passes for certain console games Gamestop would regularly sell the used games without the codes and buyer beware if they wanted to play the multiplayer (the publisher typically charged ~$10 for the key).

I'm surprised a massive retailer is stupid enough to buy and sell used PC games that are post-2004. I think a good 95% are now tied to online accounts. It's the (supposed) reason PC gaming is cheaper. No second hand sales.

Me too, I think it might have been a few games that slipped under the radar and made the shelves at CEX store, I dont think its there common practice.

I was at a CEX store browsing and looked at the PC games, apart from "RAGE" they were all pre 2004.

I do think they should be more careful of what used PC games go on their shelves, or don't sell used PC games at all.

While I was at CEX there was a R9 280X for £180, is that a good deal ?

Gamestop usually informs the customer that a game has an online pass. Even if they didn't, you can still play the game in single player. Also online passes don't exist anymore for future games, so it really doesn't matter.

although some PC games wont let you install the game at all without a valid keygen that has not been used before.

Half Price Books routinely sells used Steam and EA games. Every time I'm there I go up to the counter to tell them, but they're all old ladies and clueless vinyl-playing hipsters so they just smile and nod. Imbeciles.

There's nothing wrong with buying and selling used PC games, it's up to the customer to read the system requirements on the back of the box; it will clearly state you need to authenticate said game on steam/origin. If the game is used then well DUHHH it's been claimed, most people play games before selling them on to 2nd hand stores lol.

The copies they sell are to replace damaged discs, or to have a physical copy of a game you own (say on steam already) and put it into your collection.

Moaning about game stores selling used games only stops people from replacing discs and having a box for their game collection.

Sometimes you're lucky and a code is unused. Don't hold your breath.

What I don't like though is when they sell official release games having a 3rd party release disc. I F%@King hate that, with a passion.

I'm sure they probably got it all sorted out. At some point in the last two and a half years.
