BF2 will have many players for a very long time to come still. BF 2142 really isn't a sequal, just another option if you like future warfare kinda games. So i'd go with BF2.
I'd go with Battlefield 2. UT2004 is still great, however and you have UT3 coming out this year or the beginning of 2008 (PCZONE has stated that it may get pushed back to 2008 but they're hoping it doesn't).
BF2 requies some form of intellegence. UT is a dead brain, who has the biggest gun game (still quite fun though).Swiftstrike5
You have no idea what you're talking about. UT2004 is probably the most skill-oriented shooter around. There really is no "biggest gun" (superweapons aside) as most of the weapons are balanced extremely well, and are just useful in different situations. This is unlike BF2, where so many weapons feel redundant (even though they're in different kits.)
Both are unique experiences though. UT2004 is extremely fast paced, with a very steep learning curve. BF2 is much slower, easier to get kills in, and overall a bit easier to jump in to.
I own both games and love both of them. BF2 is great fun online if you can find the right server and UT04 is one of the few games you can have fun playing against bots.
