Hey guys, I want to start recording some gameplay of BC2 but I've never recorded games before so I really don't know how to do it. A quick Google search shows a lot of different ways ranging from Fraps, Xfire, to WeGame. I was wondering what you guys feel is the easiest and most painless way to record my gameplay? Is it one of these, or something else entirely? Let me know! :P

Most people use Fraps (myself included) and have found it to be very simple to use as well as very proficient.

Do I need to purchase the full version of Fraps to record? Perhaps I should have mentioned that I am looking at free options at the moment...

Fraps is good if you are willing to splash the cash for it. If not, Xfire works well enough :D Xfire has the benefit of having a convertor and unploader built into it too, so you can put videos straight onto the xfire website after recording them.

Oh sorry, yes Fraps does cost to use, but if you are willing it does allow recording in HD. However, I am not sure about Xfire in that matter.

Do NOT get Wegame. I used to stand by it but they decided to start charging and the basic version is crap. I went from beautiful HD High Res shots to a grainy 360p on youtube max.

You can use the free version of fraps. Just push the record button again as soon as the minute is up. Keep doing that till you're done recording, and then string the videos together in a movie editor.

You really only have two options. Either use a built in pc solution like fraps which will degrade performance some, or use an external device like a capture card or a digital video recorder. Te latter Orion is optimal but it's the most expensive. HD capture devices run a few hundred for analog and up to several grand for digital.

To record PC game play, you must download or buy a program that captures realtime video. I would say XFire, as its one of the best, excelent quality and free. Go http://www.xfire.com/. You will need a fast graphics card, processor and RAM because saving videos is quite hard for the computer.

If you want to record your CS with high quality, you should choose the right program. The one I used can record everything on screen, and also help you save the file to video. It also can convert the video to many other formats, so I often use it to record PC gameplay when I was playing and upload to my website. http://www.screenrecord.net/record-pc-gameplay.html

Xfire records in high res but it lags me out terribly. I'd go with Fraps... seemingly what everybody uses. Sure it isn't free but I've heard it's good.

Usually people serious about recording gameplay would have 3TB hard drives for dedicated video storage. Also, if you're doing gameplay commentaries MSI Afterburner's video capture works excellently and doesn't drag system performance nearly as much, with the downside that it doesn't capture sound.

Fraps seems to offer the best all round solution, couple of things to be aware of with it though is make sure the destination path for the recordings is on a physically seperate HDD as this will improve performance.

I used to record HD content (MW2) for commentatiers on a Dualcore 4GB RAM GTX260 and it was fine, it all comes down to if you have a well configured PC and the additional drive to record to then FRAPS isnt the hog people make out IMO.

Also if you are looking for a cheap video editing package then the Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD is a good buy at around £40 and also allows voice overs to be recorded directly in to the program.

I use FRAPS. Keep in mind FRAPS will output uncompressed footage. And it splits files every 4gigs. I use Virtualdub and ffdshow with xvid to compress my videos. And when uploading to youtube they also compress the video. Here are some videos I uploaded. This is just about the best quality you will get from youtube with your videos. Be sure to watch them in "Original"(IF you want the best quality) which is under the resolution selection tab and above 1080P. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MawhvHBpcMAhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tvc3OMelx-4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLkg97aDr9k

Make sure FRAPS is installed on that separate hard drive too. If FRAPS records to a hard drive it is not installed on then it will give worse performance. Also try to separate FRAPS to a different CPU core than what your game is on.

I use Fraps (registered full version) to record, and VirtualDub (with the Xvid MPEG-4 codec) to compress.

You should download the combined community codec pack. Then under Virtualdub compression select ffdshow and then the configre tab. Then select MPEG-4 and under FourCC select Xvid. I received better compression quality doing that. Before in some of my videos, when uploaded to youtube, had worse accuracy and the smaller details were smudged over.

What I use to record PC gameplay is MSI Afterburner. It records in any resolution you want (you can choose from the settings) and it is entirely free from the MSI Afterburner website. You can see some gameplay of MSI Afterburner on my YouTube channel (VortexGamer8). Hope this helps!

MSI Afterburner does record sound, this might be an issue with the installation? Because I record PC gameplay with it and I upload it to Youtube, check it out (VortexGamer8).

Yes it does...

MSI Afterburner works fine. It's better then fraps.

Fraps takes up a lot more resources and has no options. It doesn't even compress the video.

**EDIT**

Even knowing this is an old thread. It puzzles me that people still use fraps.

msi afterburner didn't record sound properly back then

it's the best anyway now

adds a bit of input lag is the only problem
