So I'm looking to upgrade, maybe GPU? CPU and mobo? what would be the best upgrade for my current system, I was leaning towards GPU, maybe like a 1060 or 1070? I mostly game at 1080p so not worried about 4k atm.

specs:
FX-8350 BE
MSI 970 gaming mobo
G.Skill sniper ddr3 8gb
Gigabyte R9 280X

@metroid5: If you game at 1080p 60FPS then you really only need a GTX 1060.

Going from GTX 970 to a GTX 1060 is a waste. Going to a GTX 1070 you should see around 70% increase over 970 if you had an intel cpu. However I believe your best option is a new cpu/mobo. Most games still favor performance per clock where AMD really lacks. When a game is coded well with multithreading FX 8350 tends to be comparable to 2nd/3rd gen intel i5's. If your into MMO's or games not coded as well or favor single core performance you can see nearly 2x the minimum framerate between modern i5/i7 and FX series cpus on same gpu. If you were to get say get a GTX 1070 your FX 8350 will hold it back so much that its performance gain would be slightly better than what you have now, if the game isnt optimized for MT.

I say getting an i7 6700 z170 16gb DDR4 would be the better option, and in some cases you will see your performance increase so much that its like having a new gpu.

*EDIT*

lol thought he had GTX 970 gpu not 970 based chipset mobo.

Since Ive read it correctly yea 280x to 1060 is a good upgrade, but as I stated before a 1070 on your FX8350 is a waste until you upgraded that cpu.

Upgrade the cpu and mobo. I'm doing that when the christmas sales come. I have an amd fx6200, and AMD cpus are just nowhere near where they need to be for gaming. I'm gonna get a ddr4 board with ram, and maybe an i5 65/6600

There are games like bf1 and gears4 where the 8350 actually breaks about even with 6600k i5 thanks to impressive multithreading, but that's just few games, in most others 6600k is miles ahead

GTX1060 is at GTX980 level, now 280X that you currently have is 40% weaker than that card, if you decide to go with 1070 then your CPU will bottleneck it even more.

I would definitely recommend on i5 6600 - doesn't have to be K version, along with a new MOBO, DRR4 RAM and GTX1060 to top it all, if you have more money then sure GTX1070 will do even better.

If you want to save the cost on RAM DIMMs then you can pick i5 4690 CPU.
