Hello guys, I'm finally switching from console gaming to pc gaming, the main reason is Steam, yeah I said that. Pondering all the pros and cons I firmly believe that console gaming is too expensive, while - with all the due proportions - Pc's is the best value for money, considering that I would not use the Pc only for gaming, but both for leisure time and work. so yeah, it's a goodbye to the xbox 360 for me, I will keep it for some exclusives here and there.

Now, I'd like to know what games you guys can recommend, divided by the following genres:

INDIE

rpg

racing

sport

action/action adventure

platformers

rts's

adventure

puzzle

TBS

thanks!

Why say goodbye to the other consoles? I wouldn't deprive myself of games not on the PC if I already have a console.

Some of my additions:

-----

Flight Sim:

Non-combat: Flight Simulator X

Combat: DCS:Black Shark

-----

FPS:

Crysis/Warhead

-----

Action Adventure:

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

-----

RPG:

The Witcher

-----

RTS:

Starcraft 2

Turn-based strategy

You should add FPS as well. It's a key genre for PC gaming.

Actually, I'm not a big fan of FPS myself, but if there is one you should play it would be Half-Life 2.

edit: I actually always assumed that Half-Life was a PC exclusive, but see that it did come out for the XBOX, so you may have played it.

I played it, because it ran well even on my laptop, but to be honest I'm tired of all those shooters, that's also why I'm switching to Pc gaming, there's just more variety. Fps's are the new Casuals imo

Understand. By the way, the genres to me that scream "PC" are RTS, RPG and TBS. Games like Civilizaton 4 (or 5) are must play PC games. RTS is almost completely PC exclusive. I know there are some RPGs on consoles, but it really is not the same when you play on PC where they were born.

RPG: The Witcher, Mass Effect series, Torchlight, The Elder Scrolls III and IV.

FPS: (FPSs are awesome games both for casual and competitive players): Counter-Strike Source, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life series.

RTS: Company of Heroes (and expansion packs), Empire: Total War, Age of Empires III (and expansion packs).

TBS: the upcoming Civilization V (Civilization is awesome, there's probably no chance they'd screw this one up).

Action/Adventure: the upcoming Darksiders (console version is great), Batman: Arkham Asylum, Portal (more like puzzle/adventure though), Prince of Persia series (except Forgotten Sands), Devil May Cry series.

As for Rain's list, there's not one crappy game in there so I smell troll farts.

Your maybe right...but i dont agree with a publisher/dev team saying about their own game that is an "RPG"...The devs/pub put their games in the category they want...|For example...if Activision would of said about CoD MW2 that is an "RPG" this majority of casual gamers would go along with it...

For me Mass Effect 1/2 are not,not even remotely, RPG's

P.S. Btw what is "official definition" to you?I mean what are the trusted sources who can put games in categorys? For examples, game sites like Gamespot and IGN have no clue about gaming in general...they are just publicity tools for consoles(xbox in particular)...how can i trust this sites when they put a tag on a game saying that game is an RPG???

My answers in no specific order.

I put it to this topic to try and outdo this amazing list ;p

INDIE

Machinarium, Cave Story

rpg

Fallout, Fallout 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Star Wars: KOTOR, Alpha Protocol, The Mass Effect games, The Witcher

racing

Race Driver: GRiD, Burnout Paradise: Ultimate Box

action/action adventure

Overlord, Overlord 2, Just Cause 2

platformers

Cave Story (it's also free! Google it), Braid

rts's

Supreme Commander + Forged Alliance (and maybe SupCom 2, if you skip the first. Because it is significantly inferior), Starcraft 2, Command & Conquer (the whole series up until Red Alert 3 is pretty awesome), Sins of a Solar Empire

adventure

The Sam and Max games (Devil's Playhouse in particular is impressing me a lot atm), Machinarium, Discworld (an old DOS game but I loved it so much because it remains pretty true to the utterly fantastic source material)

puzzle

Portal, Braid, the Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, Audiosurf

TBS

Civilization IV

FPS

Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Left 4 Dead 2, Battlefield 2142, Borderlands

fps - STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl

racing - Trackmania maybe, I don't play a lot of racers on the PC

action/action adventure - uhh, for action maybe GTA IV

platformers - Jazz Jackrabbit 2

rts - Age of Empires III

Wow, I just realised about 95% of the games I play on PC are FPS.

Indie: Braid, Osmos, Trine, Torchlight, Penumbra series, Machinarium... I could go on forever with this list.

RPG: Almost anything from Bioware, The Elder Scrolls series, Fallout series, Deus Ex, Diablo 2 and most of its clones

Racing: Burnout Paradise is all I've got. Can't really help you there, I'm not much of a racing fan.

Sport: Again, not really my genre. Does Left4Dead count as a sport? :P

Action/Action-adventure: Half-Life series, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, Max Payne series, System Shock 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Unreal 1, Counter-Strike Source and Team Fortress 2 for multiplayer... Again, I could go on forever.

Platformers: Psychonauts, Trine, Braid, Emberwind, VVVVVVV (no, really), Eversion ... I'm sure there are tons more.

RTS: Sacrifice, Warcraft 3, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War series, Company of Heroes, Men at War

Adventure: All the old LucasArts and Sierra adventure games, The Longest Journey, Sanitarium, basically anything you think has a cool storyline

Puzzle: Portal, World of Goo, Toki Tori, Braid (there's a reason I keep mentioning this game :)), Chains, Bejeweled (personally, I like Twist), Zuma, Peggle, Plants Vs. Zombies, Defense Grid: The Awakening (The last two are tower defense games, and they're awesome.)

TBS: Civilization IV/V, Disciples II, Worms series

Racing simulator:

  • 'Grand Prix Legends' isunmatchedin the PC grand prixonline racinggenre (as far as i know, there might be others).Beware,it's also the hardest racing sim i've ever played.GPL's been around awhile(since 98'),the fans are loyal, and good.I know it's ancient, trust me.Grab it for $10 or less, update it,getVROC,and go race.

I didn't realize there were any other genres...:|

If your PC is a fast one,and has a superb video card, you'll be able to handle thenewer titles. There's good suggestions here, you can't go wrong really.:)

I have an older PC (2.4 athlon with 2 gigs ram,and a nvidia 512 GS7600 video),so i play older titles...mostly late 90's-2008 ones.Doesn't bother me a bit,there's1000's of titles to choose from,and they're real cheap.Many are going strong with loyal fanbases.

Keep this in mind when game searching.

Thank for the advice:)

Oh, and here's my list

RTS: Starcraft 2, Knight of Honor, Stronghold (old titles but extremely fun), and Warhammer series

Action: GTA series, Mass Effect series, and Mafia series

Racing: Burnout Paradise

TBS: Total War series

Sport: NBA 2K10

RPG: Oblivion and Fallout 3

How about adding Tycoon Genres? I know this genre is old but still it is a trademark of PC gaming

Mine is: Roller Coaster Tycoon series and Industry Giant 2(the game that introduces me to PC gaming)
