the athlon was more in my budget,so if i get it will it make a big difference or should i wait and save up.

the athalon Ii x4 is still really good their equal to the higher end core 2 quads in preformance. the phenom II x4's sit jsut under the core i5 neahelms (the architecture b4 sandybridge). imho id get the best of both worlds and aim for a phenom II x4 925 or 840. but if it isnt in the books an athalon II x4 is still pretty beast like.
Look at microcenter if there's one in your area/if you are in the states and can order online, they have some of the best deals for cpu/motherboard combo. If you buy them together you save a bunch of money. They have a deal where the 975 plus a mobo saves you 70 and the cpu is 170 to begin with so its 100 for a 3.5ghz phenom 2. If the deal applies to a 955 or 965 you'll be rolling in even more savings.
I find it funny how some can let you unlock l3 cache on them, though you have to read up on that. That was pretty much the very first batch of athlon 620 chips where some were phenoms with l3 disabled, those are long since gone, the athlons you can get nowadays are a completely different chip from an phenom[QUOTE="ferret-gamer"]athlons are phenoms without l3 cache basically, they perform worse than phenoms in games but are still great little processorsmitu123
