We have first rumors about upcoming successor for Radeon HD 7970. Card based on new Enhanced Graphics Core Next (EGCN) technology is codenamed Tenerife XT, so it may be called Radeon HD 8970.

Card would feature 1.2x performance of Radeon HD 7970. It is rumored that it may have 2304 stream processors and 3GB of GDDR5 memory, running on 384-bit interface with a clock of 6GHz. Radeon HD 8970 would require up to 250 Watts for calculations and 3 Watts when idle.

Radeon HD 8970 would be equipped with HDMI port with 2 additional mini-DisplayPorts.

Radeon HD 7990 delayed:

According to ORB-Hardware Radeon HD 7990 may be delayed because AMD cannot produce sufficient cooler for this card (which requires lots of power – far more than Radeon HD 6990). Card is not planned for first and second quarter of this year.

The HD 8970 is rumored to launch in December of this year. A 20% leap over the 7970 seems okay I guess.

Why are we talking about the 8970 already? All this GPU horsepower is just going to waste. People who bought a 5870 2.5 years ago can still max out almost anything at 1080p.

Not at all. This isn't a brand new architecture. An improved version was bound to happen quickly.

Well some of use play higher than 1080p. I was waiting to get an 7990 + 7970 combo for my computer. If the delay is true, which the reason they gave I don't believe, I might just wait for the 89xx cards.

ORB is only cited towards the 7990 rumor. The 8970 looks legit.

Well, Notice that I highlighted that as being the only thing I find unbelievable.

Go ahead and take the OBR portion out of your post, he is a perpetual liar.

Uhh... It is when you consider the 6990's cooler (you know, the one developed by Dyson's vacuum department).

Because no matter what something better is always coming. If you waited to upgrade until the next big thing was released, you'd never upgrade.

2304 stream processor count seems to match the original GCN prototype.

pcper.com/news/Graphics-Cards/Does-AMD-have-2304-stream-processor-GPU-waiting

Sapphire's "FLEX 6G" codename was released as Radeon HD 7970 with 6GB VRAM

PS; 6G of VRAM sounds like AMD FireStream product forprofessional GpGPU markets.

Factor in professional GpGPU and HPC markets.

The main reason for GCN's inclusion of X86-64 IP is mostly due to professional GpGPU and HPC markets.

Mainly because GCN... well the current releases are cut down versions in terms of CU's and Stream Processors. Its not worth the financial risk of releasing something powerful when its not needed(games/competition) when you could just tone it down and release it for the same price for several months while working on the same architecture and then releasing what you intended to release when its cheaper to manufacture for the same prices you intended to release it. What we saw with the HD 5870 wont happen for a long time. Incremental performance boosts with a bigger price tag. HD 6870 released for 60% of the HD 5870's price and 90% of its performance... AMD are taking the more financialy sound route this time round they released a HD 7970 for 90% of the price what they will be releasing the HD8970 and for 60% its performance.
