.. They bought out Blackcat studios.. The people who made the first.. Which also released several.. If this is to be based off that, then there will be new campaigns and it will be far more larger and non linear.. The first campaign felt like a test run to me to get down the mechanics.. Though it was fun, there is just so much you can do with this kind of system in making items like the welder way more useful.. And this game is is dieing for a last man standing stages.. Where your in a bunker or building, holding off wave after wave of aliens for as long as possible.
Doubt it as there is no need. Dev Tools are out and its possible for community to make maps. Only thing you would possibly see is a Alien Swarm 2 if valve went that route.

This, only AS 2 would not be free. It's free...it gets patches all the time...what more do you want? it was aimed exactly at the community, that's where they suggested you look for content, the reason why they didn't sell it was because it didn't have enough content, that's a pretty big sign for "DON'T expect anymore content from us".
if this was EA or activision, then yes it would be 15 bucks. but this is valve. completely different story. we are going to get some more content for alien swarm, as everything about the game and the forum post made by a valve administrator suggests that this is not the only campaign we will see for this game. sure there is a very easy to use dev kit so that the community can create loads of new campaigns, but valve will not let this game go without more content. Read this post on the steam forums for a better understanding as to why its free.
Free because it doesn't have enough content =/= free with more content on the way. Yes it's Valve they support "their" games, but they don't do charity. Sad really...to see that people expect more after already getting so much for nothing.
