If you want a TBS game, civ 4. If you want an RTS or mix of RTS and TBS, get midievil 2, aoe3 I found wasn't that great.

And if you're looking primarily a SP experience, avoid AoE3. It has quite a horrendous AI and you'll steamroll over it from the start.

Civ V/IV, M2:TW.........AoE 3. AoE is bad and between the other two series, I like only the TBS aspects, since one is a pure TBS, then Civ V or IV, but M2 is still a fantastic game even more for people that prefer the big real time battles over way more complex TBS and managing aspects.

They're all really different and kind of hard to rate but... 1. Civ 4 2. Medieval 2 3. Age of Empires 3 Europa Universalis 3 is better then all of them though, juss sayin.

All great games in their own right but I probably spent the most time with Civ 4. That game is just so damn addicting.

none of the games are a like at all.

Age of Empires 3 is an amazing game. haters gonna hate. great gameplay and graphics for it's time. very different from AoE 2.

Total War is not a base building and harvesting RTS. The only building in the game is to upgrade units and hold regions. Total war has some epic battles but I found the game pretty difficult and random.

Could never get into Civ. Similar to Total War. very strange combat and ugly graphics. I think the emphasis is more on just expanding your empire than actual battles.

AOE 3 is a true rts.

The campaign map in Medieval 2 is more complex than all of civilization 4.

I'll quote your previous answer, you probably never got to experience what Civ is about, Civ is at least 3 times more complex than a TW game can be, it's not just about the map (which doesn't even make sense, a TBS being more complex because of the map...umm, gameplay mechanics?) A full TBS can't be compared to a half TBS with some random real time combat.

I've played Civ 3, 4, and 5 all for many hours. Perhaps I should have said I don't like Civ games as much as AoE or TW games. Shogun 2, hell, even Empire: Total War are both much more complex games in terms of mechanics and gameplay than any Civ game.

There's very few games that are as charming as Civ IV. I still remember the theme song even though I didn't play it for years. But I don't think it'll work for you if you alredy played CIV V, tho.

Medieval 2 all the way, its civ and age of empires combined (and the age of empires part is better!).

It's a bit unfair to pit them against each other: I see Age of Empires and Total War as very different RTS games. I view Age of Empires II as one of my favourite games of all time, but in this race I think Medieval II takes it.
