After buying a Dell, would opening the case up to install a new 8800 GTS graphics card bought afterwards void my Dell warranty??? Also would the new Dell computer probably have a free PCI-Express slot for the graphics card?

Cheers!

Not sure on the whole voiding the warranty thing goes but, as far as having a free PCI x 16 slot, that depends on what model you have most low midrange and low only have 1 PCIx 16 slot while thehigher end $$$ models have 2 for SLi support.

yep it will void it. Opening it up in any form will void it. im actually suprised you are trying to install a graphic card in your dell because last time i checked nearly every dell has integrated graphics and sound, ( ofcourse not the dell xps's ).

I'm not familiar with dell but I know that back when I had my HP I could dink and dunk around in there without worry. Also, if you want a better graphics card you're going to need the power to back it up, i.e. a new power supply. It's questionable as to if you even have an option for add-on graphics with your dell, unless you specify the model. Space must also be taken into conisderation, as well as AGP vs PCI-E.

My Dimension E510 came with an ATi X600 card, that I swapped out recently for a newer nVidia 8xxx series card. Also added another SATA 400gb HD, plus another 1.5g of RAM so I think they're more user friendly these days then most people think.

Wow, you sound pretty sure of yourself. Are you speaking on personal experience, or is this your opinion?

First of all, here are the ACTUAL warranty terms from Dell.

No, you do not void your warranty by opening the case. However, if you cause the problem by tinkering inside your case, then do not expect warranty coverage. Lets say, for example, you pull the old video card while the PC is still powered up (its been known to happen). The PC fries. Will Dell cover it? No.

Lets say you replace the video card, and a day later your hard drive dies. Will Dell cover it? Absolutely.

Find the fastest video card you can afford and that is compatible with your Dell, install it (carefully), and enjoy! :)

I don't know about now, but back in the day, you would really be voided if you put any hardware into the computer that didn't come directly from Dell

ok mate listen. You need a PSU supply, a good one. 500-700 watts is reccomended, especially when having a strong graphic card. So search for a good PSU online. And apparently thanks for that guy who posted above, it appears Dell dont mind you adding hardware, so yeah you can open it up JUST DO RUINE ANYTHING.

The specs for the computer the thread leader was talking about were:

Processor

Intel Viiv Core 2 Duo E4300 Processor (1.8GHz,800MHz,2MB cache)

Operating System

Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium- English

Memory

2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]

Monitors/Displays

DelL 19 INCH Silver Wide Flat Panel (SE198WFP) - UK/Irish

Hard Drives

250GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst cache

so will this p/c be able to run the 8800 GTS card?

^^ All the infomation you posted there is usless for choosing a Graphics card... we need to know the what Motherboard and how bigger PSU you have (this is not that important as Dell PSU leave very little headroom for adding anything, but you never know). The Best thing you can do is give the model number of your Dell e. g. Inspiron 531, and we can find this all out for you.

your problem is not warranty, its power supply and whether you have room for that sucker. if you have a XPS computer, than your power supply is fine, but if you have a dimension say 520, 510 etc get a 8600GT

opening your dell will NOT void your warranty, DELL clearly state that if the part you put in gets broken then they are not goign to do anythign about it, thats why they make all there higher end PC ultra expandble.
