Hi Everyone,

I know I am very far behind in terms of current computer tech and what is on the market. I stopped following it after I did my last PC build about 4 years ago. I have:

Core 2 Duo e6400 overclocked to 3.2GHz

4GB DDR2 800

ATI HD 3870

Tons of HDD space

Creative sound card

Asus P5B Deluxe/ Wifi (I think it't 965p on the northbridge if I remember correctly)

I may be looking to do a computer upgrade later this summer, but a lot has changed in 4 years. Can anyone give me some help in terms of what is new on the market for intel and AMD. I also need a lot of help with Nvidia's and ATI's current video cards that are on the market. What is the newest cpu socket for intel and for AMD and what are the newest northbridge chipsets. I try to go on newegg, but there are so many new things that I'm at a loss when I search.

Thanks.

Well first, what do you want to do with your PC? Maximum settings on games? Don't care for settings? Watch movies or create them?

1155 socket for sandy bridge and AM3 for amd and AM3+ for the bulldozer coming out. If your looking to upgrade your system I'd get a sandy bridge or wait till next month for bulldozer to see if its worth going AMD.

2 bucks cheaper (before S & H) than a straight intel upgrade..

you wouldnt need to change your ram and at msot your spending 260-275 and your playing any game you want on high. and when you want to go am3+/1155 you can alot mroe naturally..

I want to play The Witcher 2 on a new monitor. I just ordered the game, but I barely meet the min specs for it and I am getting a new monitor soon (24 inch or so). Would anyone just recommend a new video card, or is my cpu in need of a boost too?

What is sandy bridge? Is that intel's top of the line? Is that like the intel core i7 series?

Performance wise, Intel is slightly better than AMD right now. However bulldozer is coming out next month which is suppose to match i7s' for half the price but nobody quote me on this, I havent been keeping up with bulldozer. I personally chose AMD over intel because of the price, I am not a fanboy of either but my AMD quad has been really good to me.

Video card wise there are alot of options out there. Radeon HD 5770 or GTX 460 depending on your preference though they're almost indentical. Im using a GTX 570 TI right now and it can play any game on ultra, Crysis 2, world of warcraft, etc. with good FPS and Im playing on a 22in monitor 1920x1080.

unless your committing yourself to like a 400-500 dollar overhaul amd is holding all the cards atm.. in temrs of built pc's sub 700 dollars is amd country above is all intel, in the upgrade side of things anything less than 400 dollars is more or less amd country while above that is all intel. bulldozer looks to jazz things up and @ the bare minimum their going to send intel into the extremeist high 900's or better with their exceptional value for the dollar.

Very cool thanks everyone!! Is bulldozer a new lineup of cpu's? Will they release quad and six core processors? Also, for video cards, does anyone know a good site for comparisons b/n ati and nvidia? All my searches show up with odd results.

bulldozer is their new lineup yes it has 3 dual core(two) cpu's, 4 quad(four) core's, 1 hexa(six) core, and then 2 octo-cores (eight)

as for the videocard its a bit mroe of on a case to case basis btuh techpowerup and tomshardware are probably the ebst places to look for that sort of data.. an hd 5770/6770 are basically slightly better than the gtx 260 (216 core) and feature dx11 compatibility and the 6770 has HD3D support

Am I right in understanding that an AM3+ board will work with a AM3 cpu? I am looking at the AMD Phenom II X4 965 which has 20 dollars off on newegg right now, but would like to get a board that is more future proof.

lol thanks for your help guys! Newegg had too many good deals and rebates to pass up so I ended up ordering the parts to my new PC. Thanks again!
