Well, looking at some local OC stores, it seems that the 8600GT's are about $100 less than I originally thought they were. I can get a XFX 8600GT from a local place for about $150 CAD ($140USD at the current exchange rate).

But, I'm currently using a X1600XT, that I bought less than a year ago when my other GPU bit the dust. I'm not a huge PC gamer, but like to play the occational bit of Oblivion, R6:V, HL2, as well as some older stuff like SC and WC3. And Im thinking of trying out Company of Heroes and getting Bioshock upon release. Also looking forward to Dragon Age. So would the newer GPU be worth the price? Mind, I dont have Vista, and dont plan on upgrading for a while, so the DX10 functionality means nothing to me atm.

Going from an X1600XT to an 8600GT is a pretty big upgrade, so I'd say go for it if you really aren't a hardcore gamer.

The cheapest 7900GS I could see at that store was about $210. And with a price difference of $60, I think I'd rather get the 8600GT if it's gonna be a better all-around preformer.

If you can afford $30 more, go for this card ASUS EAX1950Pro. It will perform quite a bit better than that card, and IMO is worth the extra $30.

Agreed.

NVIDIA have really botched anything below an 8800GTS. Hopefully they'll be able to release something like an 8800GT or GS which provide decent performance at a low price. The 8600 series are no better than the 7600, whether that's related to driver problems or just a lack of shader processors, it's not looking too good atm.

The 8600GT is obviously better than a 7600GT. I don't see why people are still saying that the 8600s are worse or equal to the 7600s..

The 8500GT on the other hand, is weaker then a 7600GT but pretty equal to a 7600GS.

Only marginally better. There is the 8600GTS, but the price of which isn't worth it.

Yeah, it's about 10-30% better and guess what? It costs about 10-30% more than the 7600GT.

Hell in Oblivion, it's about 90% better than the 7600GT.

The fact that the difference in most games range from 5-10 frames, and the fact that the 8800GTS 320MB outperforms both by three fold says that the 8600/8500 aren't worth the money.

Also, some 7600GTs can be had for $80 (after rebates), which is on average $40 cheaper than most 8600GTs (after rebates as well).

5-10 FPS = 10-30% faster than the 7600GT

The 8800GTS 320MB also costs twice as much.

That $95 eVGA 7600GT on Newegg, $80 after rebates, is the only one you'll find for that cheap... and you can't really just get prices from Newegg.

What are you even arguing? That the 8600GT is a good gaming card for the money?

Also, most people on here shop on newegg. Even though I myself do not even have access to newegg, I use it as a standard for pricing. Also the 8600GT is 50% more expensive than the EVGA 7600GT (at least with the prices I mentioned). Not worth it.

Well, I could also get a Sapphire X1950Pro as recommended, for about $180; $30 more than the 8600GT.

But lets say I was going to get Vista soon. I don't want to be buying another video card within the next year or so because I'll going into University in the fall and I'll be broke for the next bit. So with the future-proofing, and considering that I'm in no way a hardcore gamer, and the highest resolution I run is 1280x1024, would you still recommend the X1950Pro over the 8600GT?

The 8600GT is not bad I used to have one. I maxed everygame cept supcom but I dont think a 8800GTS can really max it with 1000's of units on screen. Trust me the X1600XT is not that great. The 8600GT is a huge upgrade.

Yeha. Im really kinda regretting that X1600XT purchase...

Though if the 8600GT can just about max everything out today, then It'll more than fit my needs for what I'm looking for. Up to now, I've been happily running Oblivion at 1024x768 at med/low...

Awesome, thanks.

I'll really consider this card. From your review, it'll run everything monstrously wonderful compared to what I'm used to lol

Nowa days if an ATi card is somthing like X1900XT the X1950XT is way better. Thats why I think the X2950XT will be good not the X2900
