The cpu-z doesn't recognize it, that is why its classified as a core i7, but it is the i9.

The 3DMark CPU Score. I don't even know why it matters. I don't trust 3DMark 'cause those numbers don't really help me find out how well the PC is gonna run Crysis, Convert a movie, etc.

true, i mean even now you might see a slight performance increase with these chips, not much, you wont see much of an increase using 6 cores over 4 cores (for gaming) atleast for a year or two, then you might see the 6 cores starting to matter (in gaming)

but for other tasks, rendering and all the other tasks like it, it would prolly show more of improvement. along with lots of RAM....

I was thinking the same, i expected quad cores to start being useful much later but at least the dragon age origins benchie someone here posted sometime ago proved that games can get optimized to get more juice out of more cores :)

Or wecould say that it was just aimed just to run on quad cores that is why they have the upper hand. :(

Judging by that benchmark, if I just get my Q6600 some better cooling for 3.6 GHz 9x400 operation without cooking the poor thing through excessive voltage, then I shouldn't really have to worry about CPU upgrades. (Sure, the i7 920 3.5 GHz has a commanding lead, but it isn't worth the upgrade cost from what I've got now. Maybe Sandy Bridge will change that...)

i don't see why anyone with a Q6600 would upgrade if its mainly for gaming its still a decent processor and it will only get faster in the future as more and more games start taking advantage of 4 cores and using them more efficiently there still un tapped potential in your cpu. when i upgraded my cpu i went from a 5600+x2 2.8ghz and i wanted the best cpu out there and so i got an i7 and even at stocks its very fast and well worth the upgrade. i wonder just how any years it will last me as more games take advantage or 4+cores and i haven't even OC yet so with some decent cooling i can hit 3.6-4.0 no problem.

@wklzip

yeah i know, i plan on upgrading my 6000+ to a phenom II 940 and OCing it from 3.0ghz, to 3.3 or 3.4ghz or something. and Dragon Age is definately one im picking up after i upgrade my pc. (also maybe after a nvidia dx11 card) i can be playing Dragon Age maxed at those settings hopefully minimum would be 45fps+ maybe even better dont know we will see once nvidia does their thing.

ill stick with my am2+ and the 940 phenom II, no reason for me to spend all that money on new sockets and mobos/ram, when i can just max what i have with this cpu and a good videocard (also my ram is timed at 4-4-4-12) and ill be good for a few more years, then a full upgrade would be more worth it, but for now, i think im making the best price/performance ratio, by just upgrading my cpu and videocard, lol and maybe soundcard, x-fi seems like a good idea, any other sound card recommendations?

lol sorry i just got to rambling lol.

I suppose it's the whole "keeping up with everyone else on the Internet" factor that tends to develop a sort of annoying mental itch in me. That, and I was starting to think that even the Phenom IIs had my poor Q6600 beat. Then again, they're probably upgrading from really old systems, just like you did (and I did two years ago; Athlon XP 1800+ to Q6600 sure was one heck of a jump!), in which case it only makes sense to buy more recent Phenom II or Core i7 (maybe i9 soon) systems that have a fairly reasonable price for the massive performance jump you get.

Price/Performance ratio is also my route :) And yes sticking to that mobo its an excellent choice to do the best possible upgrade in price for the cpu. ;) But sound cards, i believe nameless knows more about them, can you help me here a bit nameless? :D

Hey, where have you been on the CBPCU boards, or Xfire/Steam for that matter? I haven't seen you around lately, other than in here! On to the sound card question: after several driver revisions, my Auzentech X-Fi Prelude is finally a nice sound card that just works, though I paid way too much for it back in November 2007 (US$190!, but that was the standard Newegg price at the time). However, that's PCI-based, and if you have only free PCIe x1 slots (or longer ones not occupied by anything), then you'll have to look at the X-Fi Forte (whose potential driver quirks I wouldn't know due to not having one), or if you really want your audio run through HDMI, the X-Fi HomeTheater HD (which is basically a Forte with HDMI ports on top). Just don't expect much support for anything X-Fi-based outside of Windows...but if you're mostly going to be gaming, you're probably just going to run Windows anyway. There are other options out there (such as Asus' Xonar line), but you'd probably be sacrificing EAX support beyond 2.0 doing so. That, and I've heard reports that all the other sound cards (and even onboard Realtek codecs, for that matter) all have driver quirks for various people.

I haven't really used Dolby Digital Live (just use a cheap 3.5mm stereo headset, unfortunately), but all the Auzentech cards have it. It's been a selling point since their C-Media chipset days. It's especially important with X-Fi cards since it should allow you to retain EAX effects and whatnot in games, which generally encode in PCM (uncompressed). S/PDIF only has the bandwidth for stereo PCM; Dolby Digital and DTS are compressed to fit 5.1 surround sound within the bandwidth limitations. What Dolby Digital Live does is basically encode the sound signal on-the-fly before sending it out.

Boring screenshot if you ask me. Here is the Intel Sixcore monster in realworld applications:

http://pclab.pl/art39718-9.html

Yes, it uses the same power as a i5 750 and runs cooler than any Intel/AMD quadcore at similar clock speed.

I got my i7 920 for a spanking $180. Pretty darn good price/performance imo. It also came with a Intel baggy so that was pretty pleasing. But I'm not gonna upgrade to 6 cores just yet. Probably when 8 cores comes out then I will jump the gun and upgrade.

well i do appreciate the help and info.

would you know if eax would work if im going spdif with dolby digital live? and would it be much of a latency to what is happening as apposed to how long it is encoded/processed, to how long it is ouputed thru speakers?

if you know that would be cool, though i see you havent used it much but if you have any answers maybe you could send it to me in my inbox on here. that way we dont stray too far from topic.
