The current resolution of my monitor is 1680 x 1050 (with dvi connection of course). My question is, is it worth dropping the money for a 21.5 inch just for 1080 p? Will it look clearer on that compared to my current 20 inch? I feel the max resolution of one monitor would look the same as the max resolution of another?

get 120hz monitor if you want a big improvement

in your case, not worth it unless you just want another monitor for dual monitor work space

I have a 26" 1920X1200, and I can see the difference when I'm displaying lower resolutions. I think it is well worth it. The resolution is only one factor in the equation, though. Your distance from the screen makes all the difference---you know how when you get right up close, you can see the pixels? Size matters, too, in conjunction with distance. A resolution of 640X480 looks like an oil painting on a Walkman, but it looks like embroidery on a big display. The refresh rate has no bearing on the clarity of the display.

LCDs look best at native res, anything lower looks blurry.

But your monitor is at native res, so 1080p isn't going to look better quality, but you will have more space and smaller pixels.
