The biggest difference I saw was less jaggies.

On my Xbox 360, connected with Component Cables on my Sony Bravia 1080p tv (1080p through HDMI only), I ran Ninja Gaiden II at 720p and at 1080i and noticed less jaggies at 1080i. I'm sure 1080p would look even better, however my 360 doesn't have the HDMI output.

That said, I am running my PS3 with HDMI at 1080p and there are very few jaggies that I could find in any of my games - there are a few here and there, but I'm sure they would be more noticeable at 720p (I haven't tried running it yet).

On a side note, I also recently got a Philips brand 1080p upconverting dvd player and running that with HDMI, I can see a difference in my dvd movies, even over my 360 at 1080i (maybe HDMI is that much better than component).

Edit: disregard the DVD movie thing, I just remembered that the 360 isn't upconverting any dvd's, it switches to 480p when I run one.

If it helps at all I had a 40inch 720p Samsung and traded it in for a 42inch 1080p JVC and the JVC blows it out of the water.... and its a older model lol, but i couldnt be happier.... I dont even have Blu Ray to enjoy the 1080p yet lol...but everything looks better on this tv.... And ive had two 37inch 720p Vizios and that Samsung and now this JVC within the last year.... just saying....

Perhaps you should use the 360 VGA cable, then DVDs will be upscaled and you may even be able to use 1080p.

what a ridiculous thing to say(refered to the comment about 46inc+ 108+p, the quote didn't work) -.. 1080p runs from 37" inch HD tv's and up.. and it looks mighty fine on each.. You just have a to be a tiny bit closer to the tv compared to larger tv's..

The jaggies..

1080i is interlaced.. it only updated every second line at a time.. this results in a more blurry image, but also makes the jaggies seem to dissapear.. but in reality 720p is wastly better compared to 1080i, when it comes to moving pictures..

1080p is worth it all the way.. IF you are the person who like to see blu-ray movies.. There aren't alot of games that actually run 1080p, nor is the dvd upscaling anything to yell hurray for..

I do not believe that jaggies disappear because of 1080i. Sure, 1080i is not as good at handling motion as progressive signal, but 1080i frame does have higher resolution than 720p frame after all. The disappearance of jaggies is most likely due to rescaling of naive 720p game to 1080i. I observed similar phenomenon with my upscaling DVD player. Every-time, I turn upscaling on for my DVDs, I get smoother but slightly blurrier picture.

1080p is no doubt superior to both 720p and 1080i on paper since it essentially combines the best of both formats. However, as far as real world performance goes, many people just do not see the difference or feel that increase in PQ is not worth the extra cost. There is obviously law of diminishing returns at work here also since the higher in resolution we go the less improvement in perceived PQ we actually see. Additionally, the lager the screen the more benefit increase in resolution will give you. Only solution is to go the store and see for yourself if it worth it to you. That is being said. My next HDTV will be 1080p.

I would also like to point out that resolution is only a portion of the overall quality a TV can have. You could very well have a 720p TV that looks better than a 1080p TV because the contrast ratio may be higher, or the response time offers less ghosting, or the processing chip inside is better.

Many of the reviews on CNET state time and time again that when they pit TVs against each other, even at 50", they find it nearly indistinguishable the difference between 720pand 1080p. But hey, it's what looks best to you.

It is worth it if you have a screen larger than 50 inches, because you won't find a greater benefit with a smaller screen unless if you are closer than average viewing angle or have eagle eyes. It is best to consider a front projector or a large DLP HDTV, which offer better values with screen size, features, and performance in some cases. 1080i is 1920x1080 resolution, but interlaced, it is often used in broadcast television for less required space and to emulate a 1920x1080 image, however if done properly with deinterlacing with the television, would look just exactly like 1080p.

1080p is only usefull if you have a high-end PC, which can acually render @ 1080p

1080P is really needed for very big tv's like 60". For console gaming, 720p seems to be the standard so your not going to see much difference.

the thing I find is most PS3 multiplats have more jaggies because the on my 1080p tv the PS3 doesnt upscale its games to 1080 unlike the 360 that does most of its game so as a result games like GRID look far better on my 360 than it does on my PS3 because the PS3only kicks it out at 720 and is a jag fest

the "p" .. progressive scan, can (it's not always the case, but it can) become important with extremely fast moving objects on screen

some people can see the 2 interlaced images, so for those the progressive scan is more important
