I have at times to just hard shutdown my pc because it would stay for hours stock with 100% hdd usage my hdd is not even 2 years old so i dont think that is the problem.

Go into task manager and open the resource monitor. See what is causing the extreme usage.

This.

Also, do you have a lot of startup programs? One might be getting stuck doing something.

@tormentos: scan for malware with Malwarebytes, do a strict cleaning of viruses with some good anti virus software (Avast is free).

If it's not viruses then it's something else and as been suggested open resource monitor and see what impacting the usage so much, I would also suggest to keep OS and drivers updated.

@tormentos: Run the HDD test, if it finds issues your HDD is probably going bad. Also try doing a windows reset, type reset this pc in the bottom left, then choose not to keep anything. If this doesn't fix it your HDD is going bad, they can fail at any time but it's probably covered under its warranty.

I was having this problem with Windows 10 when I first upgraded from 7 on my 7200rpm hard drive.

I found a few suggestions which helped (like disabling superfetch) but it would always return at startup. My OS was useless for nearly 10 minutes while at 100% disk usage until it eventually calmed down.

The issue was two fold, the buggy upgrade from windows 7 and insufficient hardware. It was resolved when I performed a clean install of Windows 10 on a SSD.

That makes no sense. Something has to be using the disk. Another thing to check is your RAM usage when this happens. I remember having a memory leak with a program and it would eat up all my RAM and then access the HDD for virtual memory. My system was completely unusable until I powered it off and on again.

I had this problem before, it was a dodgy sata cable. Replaced it, worked fine.

Go into the task manager, and go to the details tab. See if the program that is causing the problem is in there. I had a virus that put some program on my hdd, and it would take up like 80 percent of my mem usage. I could never find what was causing it until seeing it int he details tab. From there, google search win 10 (name of exe) removal, and you'll troubleshoot until you are fine.
