This was a big debate at the time of their relases (1999-2000). Total classics, unanimously two of the most important multiplayer shooters ever released, and are both very, very similar. Which one is your favourite, and why? If you have not played both games for a reasonable amount of time online and off, then I ask you not to vote as you will probably give a biased opinion.

Quake 3 is my favourite, mainly because it is more simple, and therefore a purer and more entertaining experience. UT's alternate fire modes, while they work well and make things interesting, I feel that choosing between modes slowed down the action. While one could say that alterenate fire gives UT the more tactical edge, it doesn't necessarily IMO make it more entertaining. This same point goes for the translocator, which I rarely use. I enjoy using the movement system in Quake III much more, as it is faster and more flexible, and this is complemented by bunny hopping, strafe jumping and rocket jumping, which is used to greater effect in Q3. I cannot say which game had better level design. UT has a very interesting variety of maps - temples, spaceships, factories et al. I did feel that Q3 maps are slightly more practical though, and adapt to the movement system better than UT (i.e. more flow). Because of the technological differences, Quake does looks better and has more detail, but I see little point in taking that into account as it does not affect the gameplay.

I vote for Quake 3. That game was just great and is still a lot of fun. UT 99 had some really great game modes though.

Unreal Tournament 99 had a bigger impact for me. Maps, weapons, music (the music oh man), and the online was miles better for me. I never understood why Quake 3 was so popular, I honestly did not have fun with it and and didn't see whats all the hub-bub about.

Unreal 99 simply because I played it for a whole summer at the community internet access building with my friends. I will say that MoHAA is still the best deathmatch game ever made, so I still have room in my heart for Quake :P

While Quake III doesn't excel in as many areas as UT, what it does, it does fantastically, which is why I went with it. The gunplay is far superior to UT and feels so much smoother, less clunky. Apart from the machinegun which is clearly pretty inferior, all the weapons are equal in strength but are all suitable in different situations, which I love. The game is simple, but is so polished it comes off as the perfect deathmatch experience to this day.

Yes I absolutely love Alexander Brandon's music. He did the soundtrack for Deus Ex too, which I like even more than UT's.

From what I have seen the competitive gaming community still competes with Quake 3. So if i had to choose, it will be that.

Haha, this is a typical thread from 1999-2000. Oh well, interesting to see it again.

UT99 out of the box is the better game, but expansion and mods brought Quake III up to par.

I generally use a 3rd option on my Polls for those who haven't played enough of both....but want to see Poll results instantly. Seems to work well.

As much as I like playing The Longest Yard, especially on instagib in Quake 3, as well as adore its twitch shooting mechanics in this day and age. I have to go with UT99. I sunk far more hours into UT over the years, sifting through all the mods, maps, skins and weapons for the game, as well as mixing at matching mutators, customizing bots, and playing the large variety of game modes. UT99' was almost like an FPS toybox, wheras Quake 3 was much more streamlined.

in my opinion Q3 was better than UT, but UT2k4 was better in every aspect to Quake 3. And Quake 3s level design wasn't that good to be honest. Rocket Arena 3 however i will argue has the single best MP Level designs of any game to date.

Q3A may have had a technically more advanced engine, but UT 1999, in my honest opinion, is just the better game. There's already a lot of solid content from the start, but it's the mod scene that sets UT apart. Tons of maps (probably because it seems easier to map for with the whole subtractive schtick), plenty of weapon and gameplay mods (the Strangelove being my all-time favorite), and best of all, if you don't have something, the game will happily download it off the server for you. Q3A just doesn't seem to have nearly as much flexibility there.
