the pascal is almost 2 years old, maybe nvidia will release something new this july but I highly doubt it, amd isn't doing anything, so why should nvidia waste time on hbm when the tech seems to be causing so much problems, amd didn't figure it out with hbm 1 with fury cards and they don't seem to be doing any better on vega with hbm 2

so is it better to try and get a good deal on a 1080 now or wait for ampere or volta or watta or whatever nvidia is gonna name their new card which may not materialize this year and risk gpu prices going through the roof with another mining boom?

if you got something around a 1050 or equal then just wait, however the card i bought 6gb 1060 6 months ago it has gone up another 100 aud. the boom should hit its peak soon though.

I agree with npiet1.

If you got a card like a 1050 then wait till next gpu arrives and buy it on release

@urbangamez: Still rolling with my 970 on high settings on modern games at 1080p.

I'm not going to replace it till it dies or most games will start running lower than medium graphics - but that's just me.

GTX1080 is still a solid choice for 2K and it's going to be this way for 2-3 years from now, again depends on what fps and graphic settings you're aiming for.

@urbangamez:

All depends on what you have currently.

I've been so close to upgrading my 970 so many times.

However I'll wait the 970 is still awesome.

I'm spending the money on a hot.tub instead

@urbangamez: I would wait for the new cards to come out if you are not needing to replace a GPU that died.

@urbangamez: Congrats. 1080 is a great card. I had one before I upgraded to the 1080 Ti. I also have a 1070 in my laptop and a 1060 in another rig that I am going to sell. So, I have owned all the worthwhile GPUs in the 10 series (except the 1070 Ti).

@urbangamez:

Hey another EVGA GTX 1080 SC owner! Its a good card, Just by turning up the power limit and temp target to max mine will boost anywhere between 1987mhz -2012mhz, without having to mess with core clock or voltages.

@04dcarraher: thanks, right now i'm just looking at the card in the case all day, lol, will get bored and start playing a game soon.

@PredatorRules: thank you, will do

@BassMan: thanks. was thinking of getting the 1080ti kingpin from evga, but the price, it was supposed to be $799, when I saw it was $1200, then it disappeared from their site. also thought about the evga 1070ti ftw 2 but again the price, it was the cost of a 1080, so might as well get a 1080.

pics of new rig posted in pinned thread
