Should I get a GTX 1070, or save for a 1080 for 144hz? Here's what I'm aiming for.

So, I'm about ready to make the jump to a 144hz monitor, and with it, new hardware is in order. My goal is not only to play current games on high settings at 1080p (not an ultra gamer here, unless the jump is big enough) with as high of a framerate as possible, but also to account for the inevitably more demanding future titles of the next few years (looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077.)

So my question is, if I wanted to play at this resolution on these settings, and utilize the potential of my 144hz monitor, would a 1070 or 1080 be a better, long-lasting choice, considering the price difference. I'd prefer to find a model that only requires one 8 pin power connector. Thank you.

Edit: Not sure if I really need to list my specs for this simple question, but here you go.

Intel Xeon E3-1240 v2
8GB DDR3 1600
Nvidia Geforce GTX 970
1TB WD Black 7200RPM HDD
Windows 10 Pro

I know it's a bit older of a build than usual, and my RAM may be a bottleneck, but I'm not too concerned with that, as long as I'm able to get more performance than my current 970.

GTX 1070 is fine for 1080p/144Hz, but you'll need to pair it with a G-sync monitor. Or wait for AMD Vega and buy a Free-sync monitor. Free-sync is cheaper, and Vega will probably have the same performance per dollar as Nvidias.

144hz, a 970 will still be fine at 1080p. You don't need g-sync either.

I personally have a 1070 and its amazing, I know im set for atleast 3 years before I gotta turn down any settings. IMHO from what i've seen the 1080 will only give you a 10-15 fps difference in most games. You gotta watch benchmark videos and be the judge but unless you can get the 1080 on discount, the price to fps ratio isnt worth it.

GTX 1070 should be okay for now but if you really want to push 144fps in FPS games and be more future proof then GTX 1080 is the way to go.

Get the 1080 unless you don't play any demanding games. Xbox play anywhere titles won't run maxed out at that frame rate. Neither will most AAA multiplat titles.

1070 will be fine for high frame rate at 1080p probably at or close to Ultra settings. 1070 is good for Ultra gaming at 1440p too, but you'll be sitting around 50-60fps.

1070 is a great card. I'd say go with that.

with the cheap prices on the 1080 right now it is foolish to go with a 1070 IMO
