I'm currently using:

I7 4770k with a r9 280x for gaming.

I want to upgrade but am wondering how big of a difference I'd actually get playing in 1080p for the price difference.

I'll give you the price I'd have to pay for each card on top of adding my r9 280x

R9 280x crossfire + 150$

R9 290x + 150$

GTX 970 +230$

GTX 980 +440$

Is it worth me going right to the 980? I don't even run games on ultra, I keep most textures on ultra but the rest I set to medium or high to maintain 100+ fps on my 144hz monitor. So I'm not asking what card would run it best on ultra, just which one is worth me paying the extra money.

I understand some games are better with nvidia then amd and the other way around, just trying to get the best bang for my buck.

The 980 is nowhere near worth that price jump. The 290x and 970 are pretty close in performance, so get the 290x if you want to save money, or the 970 if you really love nvidia.

Going from a 280x to 970/290x at 1080 is around a 40% increase in average performance so. If you can hold off do so until next year.

@04dcarraher: 40% is still a decent increase, if sells his 280x he wouldnt be too much out of pocket either.

Maybe £100- £150 cost ish

Why not the 390x?? It is better cooled than a 290x, has 8gb of ram, and out performs the 970 across the board from what I have seen with reviews..

There's a nice upgrade from 280X to 290 (I've done so) but if you've got an option for crossfire (MOBO, PSU and CASE ready) I'd go for 280X crossfire.

Either that or go for the 980Ti

Why don't you consider a 390? It's basically a 290X with shit load of VRAM.

Isnt the 390x like the 290x equivalent and the 390 like the 290? I read people saying its not worth getting these cards due to the sinilarity and the 290x being cheaper then the 390x?

Also, i was debating crossfire. I have the cooling and can definitely run it crossfire. I was thinking that would be better then just upgrading to a 290x alone etc. I dont want to buy a 980 ti because ill most likely buy the new amd greenland in 2016

@Mortalmaster123:

Think of the 390x as an overclocked 290x and think of the 390 as an overclocked 290 both having 8gb. 290x is around 40% faster than your 280x at 1080p and the 390 is the same, while 390x is more like 60% faster. You have to watch it with Crossfiring since it will and can introduce frame timing issues.

Like what I said earlier wait it out and see what DX12 does. Your 280x will see the benefits, your not really hurting with 3gb with 1080p too.

R9 390 is an overclocked 290 so performance wise it's on par with 290X.
