So I built my second PC just over a year ago (first one still works great it's just I move around a lot and it's too big to move easily) and within a couple of months it developed a fault where it will randomly reboot. It happens most often when I play video games or watch catch up tv and it's completely sporadic - sometimes it will happen several times in an hour, sometimes once a day etc. The screen goes black for a second then the POST comes on and the PC loads as normal. Windows gives me this error message:

Log Name: System

Source: Kernel-Power

Event ID: 41

Level: Critical

The PC is a micro atx build (as size was the key building point). So far I have tested all the components with memtest, gpu burner etc and each component has passed. I have monitored temps and nothing out the ordinary (although PC fans go mental when playing games). I have upgraded the PSU from 500w to 600w and recently replaced the motherboard to a more reputable Gigabyte motherboard. I have also moved several times and the problems persists which suggests it is not a fault with the wall power.

Software wise I installed Linux Mint and the problem persisted which indicates it is not a Windows fault. There are plenty of forum posts online about this kind of fault and I have followed as many solutions as I can, changing the Windows power management settings etc and updating drivers.

Has anyone come across this problem before and can shed some light on this? Any help is greatly appreciated :)

This is the dxdiag for the PC:

@tofu-lion91: Do you get a "details" option when the message occur?

It could give us some more details to work with. Also are you sure every cable is properly attached to the mobo?

I've double checked all cables with the motherboard manual. The motherboard has recently been replaced too (as the old one was cheap and I wondered if maybe it wasn't up to supporting such a beefy processor so the new one has been chosen carefully). It seems to be a common problem given the amount of forum posts online about it but no-one has ever posted a proper solution :l Just wondered if this had happened to anyone here and what they did to solve it as it's been ongoing for almost a year now and has been driving me crackers lol!!

You have probably tried this already.. But anyway. Do you got duplicates of some drivers running at the same time?

From quick looking on the web, one user had issues with audio drivers resulting in a similar failure as yours.

I got some help from another user on a different forum.

She told me to check my audio drivers. I had three, TWO ATI High def audio drivers and one VIA High def audio

My conclusion is that the two ATI's were fighting echother for the information causing the crash, I disabled one and it works PERFECTLY(thus far) game used to crash sometimes at loading, 10 seconds into game play no more then 20 seconds.. I've been playing for about 3 hours now on all high settings, changin the resolution a couple times a minute trying to cause the crash. I'm unable to cause the crash.

CHECK YOUR AUDIO DRIVERS IN DEVICE MANAGER! If you have more than one DISABLE ONE AT A TIME AND TRY TO CAUSE THE CRASH!

hopefully someone else is able to chime in with their suggestions on this as well. :)

Btw long time since I've seen you in the forums Tofu :P

@horgen: Yeah I briefly looked at that and I had both realtek and nvidia drivers, I disabled one (can't remember which) and it didn't make a difference but I've since updated drivers etc and they're both on there again. Which one shall I keep? I think the realtek ones are for my speakers and the nvidia is coming from the gpu. Yeah it has been a while! Nice to see an old face on here :)

I don't know. My exactly had two of the same. You could try disabling one or the other again though.

If you're going to disable an audio driver, I'd suggest the nvidia one. The realtek drivers are controlling the motherboard audio chip and are definitely more important.

You shouldn't need nvidia drivers for audio through your GPU either, I regularly connect to the living room TV through HDMI from my GPU and I only have realtek drivers installed.

Run memtest86+, run street tests like prime95, and furmark, and monitor your temperatures.

This most likely isn't a driver problem.

What model PSU. A 600W psu says nothing. A $30 psu paired with a power hungry FX 8xxx series cpu is a bad idea

Also if the motherboard is rather new it might be even the Bios fault. Update your Bios to the latest version

I had similar symptoms when first bought my MSI z97m-g43 mobo. My pc would randomly black screen and restart with

Sometimes it did it 2-3 times a day other times it would be weeks without doing it

After a few bios updates though all those problems stopped ( the last time it did something like that was 7-8 months ago )

Also update anything related to your motherboard . Audio, ethernet and chipset drivers from Gigabyte's site

@tofu-lion91: @adamosmaki:

Log Name: System

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly

It's really just logging a system crash and doesn't give a massive amount of info unless you speak Hex, even then it's limited.

This may help though.

Thanks for the replies guys but the microsoft thread just says have you turned the pc off by the power button which isn't the case. It's been a few days since I disabled one of the audio drivers and seemed to be running ok, but it's just flicked off again as I was scrolling through Facebook, yet I watched a film earlier no problems. Has anyone come across this problem before? It's driving me mad lol!

Well, I would like to know more about the PSU, I had a problem that seems somewhat similar, it was the modular PSU which had a hissy fit. It does sound like my PSU problem alot. But needing to know more about it.

Especially with the things others have tried to guess (and it seems not to have been).

If it is a modular PSU it might simply be that a connector is lose, or they are spread out too much (the issue I had, I learned something new that day :x )

It is good thinking, I had a modular PSU fitted before and it was the first thing I replaced but the new one is a non-modular 600w and it seemed unlikely that both were faulty. I think the new one is a Storm 600w PSU :)

Did you also get random reboots? And did it resolve after you replaced the PSU?

Yeah, completely random reboots. at the strangest of times. You would think that it would be under load, right? but it was just as likely to simply power down and reboot, by simply reading on a forum, or playing music.

It would be completely random and irratic. And yeh it stopped when I fixed the PSU. although in my case, I simply plugged all the SATA power feeds right next to eachother on one lane.

I guess a similar issue would occur with other faults aswell, as a dying or simply an unstabile PSU.

Do you have a spare PSU to test with? Might be a hazzle, but is an easy way to see if that is the issue.

But yeah, had odd reboots, as if power simply drained from the PC for a short while, making it reboot. Error messages in Windoes would always be generic, since no real issue could be found (as it would simply just lose power). Some times it would run without flaws for weeks, other times it would reboot or in a few cases simply shut down multiple times through a day. So sounds a bit like what I had. Atleast that is my initial thought.

I have had similar things happen two me on two separate occasions.

1st time it was a faulty powersupply. Second time it was due to my CPU cooling fan getting knocked slightly loose when I moved it once, mostly because of a faulty clip. It was not causing overheating while I was idling in my OS, but as soon as I did something strenuous my PC fans would also go mental and my CPU would overheat and reboot.

I ended up getting a more secure Tower CPU cooler in the end.

@Maddie_Larkin: Hello.

What's your GPU and CPU temps?

@Coseniath: GPU temps nowadays is low 30 ideling, around 60 under load, CPU is around: 26 ideling and low 50 under load.

So temps are quite fine. for the cpu and card respectively.

@Maddie_Larkin: Hmm, my second tier of thoughts are targeting RAM.

Can you run a memory diagnostic? Like MemTest86.

Sorry, long post - read as much or little as you like....though, you might just think I'm crazy and ignore my post altogether

When you say you "moved" spots, did you actually move the computer to another location in the house or did you just move it to the next outlet down the wall?

Between my kitchen, my dinning/living room area there are 10 outlets (not counting the places the stove, dishwasher and refrigerator plug into). Out of those 10, I know what outlets share the same circuit breaker. There are 4 outlets in the living/dinning room that share, 2 other outlets in the dinning/living room area and 2 in the kitchen share, the fridge and 2 other outlets in the kitchen share. Before I knew what outlets were linked, it sucked when the breaker tripped in the kitchen and my computer powered off in the living room area.

My point is, you say you "moved" the computer, but that doesn't mean it's still not feeding from the same power source where you could be having issues.

My last job, I did tech support for POS equipment. You'd be surprised how many stores have a bad outlet or power that just causes havoc on the POS computers. We had one store that screamed and screamed at us because the registers/POS equipment we'd send them, the MSRs (card readers, a.k.a - magnetic strip readers) would keep failing. They went through half dozen replacements in a 6 month span and they swore up and down that the equipment was to blame. After we finally convinced them to get an electrician out there - he set them up with line conditioners and they haven't had a problem since.

Bad power has caused cash drawers to fail, thermal printers to fail, touch screens to burn out, MSRs to fail....you name it. Bad power can cause all sorts of problems. Power/electricity can be such a tricky little bitch that it boggles the mind in the ways that it can screw up electronics. I worked with a store location that was struck by lightning....every single device connected to their network had its NIC fried. Anything else on the computers functioned without a hitch. I've helped another store with a lightning strike that took out the office server computer and 3 out of the 4 registers (they were dead in the water). The 4th register worked fine, nothing happened to it.

You said you've ran tests, swapped MB, PSUs, tried Linux and Windows and even "moved" the computer and the problem follows. Either there's something seriously wrong with the case and components you're using or it's getting bad power. You may say other things plugged into the wall work fine (TV, DVD player, lamp, vacuum, etc) and you never had any issues with them....but these business I would help would say the same things, like, "Our fountain drink station is plugged into the same outlet and it doesn't have any problems." Or "The office computer printer is in the same outlet and it hasn't had any problems."

So, from all the suggestions from others and things you've tried, I'd suggest the following two things:

1) Remove the tower from the equation. Set everything on a cardboard box and use it for a bit, only have the mouse and keyboard plugged into the MB USB or PS/2 ports and see how it works.

2) If the above doesn't resolve anything, look into a line conditioner (not a surge protector) or completely move the computer to another location in the house and use it for a while to see if it powers off/restarts on you.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I've not been on my computer for the last couple of weeks so sorry for the late reply. I've logged on this evening and it's happened again a few minutes ago as I was browsing Facebook and listening to Muse on Youtube :l

@Coseniath: I ran a lot of the stress tests myself but it was briefly booked into a PC repair shop and they ran a memtest and said it was fine. They got halfway through the hdds before I had to leave town again so I couldn't get a full diagnostic.

@neatfeatguy: I actually moved across the country! The problem started when I was at Cosford then I moved to Lossiemouth and still getting the same problem. I wonder if it's just the dodgy power outlets the RAF put in their accommodation blocks - I remember it being fine when I first built it and had it running at home over Easter break. It seems odd that both blocks at opposite ends of the country would have the same problem but it certainly seems a good theory. I might see if I can get hold of a UPS.

Got the Kernel 41 power failure today myself -_-

Though it happened after I exited a game.. Next Car Game: Wreckfest. I got this nagging feeling that it is related to upgrading to Win 10... I guess I should do a clean install... Since it seems to have lost half of the things I've installed on this computer : |

Edit: found this

The kernel power event ID 41 error occurs when the computer is shut down, or it restarts unexpectedly. When a computer that is running Windows starts, a check is performed to determine whether the computer was shut down cleanly. If the computer was not shut down cleanly, a Kernel Power Event 41 message is generated.

An event 41 is used to report that something unexpected happened that prevented Windows from shutting down correctly. There may be insufficient information to explicitly define what happened. To determine what may have happened and to identify a potential resolution, it is important to know what the computer was doing at the time just before the event occurred.

If event 41 is logged because power to the computer was interrupted, consider obtaining an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) such as a battery backup power supply. An underpowered or failing power supply may cause this behavior. For example, if you added RAM or additional devices or hard disks when this problem began, the power supply may cause the problem.

@tofu-lion91: My last thought is already being posted by @horgen.

Something between hardware and PSU might cause the error...

Sometimes for many reasons, cables are not connected well, or to say it more precisely, hardware sometimes don't get power for many reasons.

Pe: I saw one PC that got similar problems cause the PCIE cable wasn't connect to the GPU properly... (a GPU can still run almost any 2D task without extra PCIE power)

@Coseniath: I had no trouble at all with the witcher 2 though.. Anyway I re-connected the power cables and tried to make tidier on the cable routing side of the case. As well as removing one 6 pin cable that I used to power both the led light and as extra power for the fan controller. I'm surprised that the event logger says it happened twice today, within 80 minutes of each other. Though one of them could be related to shutting down the computer because wreckfest stopped responding...

Although I did change my gpu to a 980Ti with a power configuration that allows it to draw up to 375W, I've only seen the actual power draw go over 100% (250W) when I OC'ed it and raised the power limit. The PSU is Corsair AX750 bought in summer 2012... I doubt it is the reason for the sudden powering off.

@horgen: Yeah for your situation, I doubt too. :P

It happened only once so it could be a lot of things...

And when happens only once the usual suspect is the software. :P
