If you can grab a GTX 1080ti for under $700 then go with that, if not then 2080

2080 is technically better, but not by much. If you can get the 1080 Ti for much cheaper (check used deals), I would go with that. I wouldn't buy either card right now for a long term purchase though. The next-gen 7nm cards from Nvidia are probably not far off and will provide a good performance boost over these current RTX cards. Also, the raytracing is not at a level where it makes sense for high end GPUs. Do you really want to be playing games at 1080p/60fps with a 2080?

Less VRAM on the 2080 could be a problem.

Apparently new drivers have been bugging performance in games on the 10 series, they've also caused artifacts in games like farcry 5 and witcher 3, forcing me to switch to the newest version before the new cards launched, month old drivers at this point.

So much for nvidia having quality bug free drivers.

They just trying to push RTX by gimping the older cards. Not the first time.

RTX 2080 has the potential to include improvements beyond its current benchmarks (ray tracing and DLSS). It all comes down to price and your willingness to bet on those potential improvements.

I'm also building a gaming pc and I got 2080 for only $100 more than 1080 ti. I would have hesitated had that been more like $300 though.

@BassMan: The 1080/60 numbers are from unoptimized first renditions of ray tracing in battlefield v/metro. The battlefield v devs have come out and said that they can implement it much more efficiently if they have more time with the RTX cards. I don't think it's a reliable number to use, probably best to wait for the first ray tracing games to come out and we get an idea of how it works when optimized.
