If I'm due for an upgrade soon, what would it be?

Shot from Speccy:

I think I'm OK but seeing the reqs for the new Homeworld coming out (not to mention VR in the next year), what should I be looking into? My vid card is about 6 months old. I'm thinking my CPU is looking out of date the most, but is my motherboard capable of an i7? Is an i7 even necessary at this point?

Thanks.

I don't think that your CPU is out dated if I was interested in vr , I wait to see benchmarks cause I7 is ridiculous requirement . I get another 970 if I were you or maybe 980ti .

If that CPU is at stock speed, you need to overclock it for VR.

You don't need to upgrade anything.. your system should be fine for VR. Your CPU is totally fine.. you can always overclock it to 4GHz or higher. By the time you'll feel like 970 is getting weak.. Nvidia will release Pascal *their new line of GPU's*.

The way I see it.. currently best upgrade would be SSD for your system. The only MUST upgrade for you is Windows 10 since DX12 is starting to come around.

BTW you could get an i7-3770K it's compatible with your mobo but they're still expensive... like $300+ and you won't see much performance increase gaming wise.

Your system is good for your current target of 1080p/60fps. Swap out the 970 for a Pascal GPU when the time comes if you want the beastly performance for VR.

@BassMan: I agree. Wait for Pascal & Arctic Island before you upgrade your GPU. Also, your CPU is just fine. Maybe get a better cooler and overclock it when you upgrade your GPU...

I agree with most of the replies saying that everything should be good, though an SSD is a huge upgrade in terms of overall snappiness. However, I took a second glance at your specs, and I was wondering: what's up with your ram's timings? I boosted my RAMs frequency a little from 1600MHz to 1799MHz, and its timings are still only 7-8-7-24. I thought 11-11-11-28 was more in line with 1866MHz memory..?

I really can't tell you, I've no idea.

An SSD for sure. Go for 512GB as they are affordable now.

This probably happens cause @MirkoS77 isn't using extreme memory profile (aka XMP) in the bios.

As happens with 99% of RAM, if you don't use the XMP, it will not run on advertised speeds and it will use the JEDEC default speeds.

Enabling XMP will probably enable MultiCore Enhancement as well which makes the CPU to use a few extra MHz in turbo mode when it even uses all cores.

Certainly not a video card. Wait for Pascal or Polaris coming out later this year. But as someone has mentioned. Get a SSD. It makes a world of difference. I upgraded to a SSD on my Gaming Laptop AND have a SSD on my desktop.
