Like the title says, I need a new CPU, and also a new MB and RAM. I need it for 1080p gaming, and I'll keep my RX 470 4GB and Hyper 212 Evo cooler. So i5-8500 or Ryzen 1600 seem like obvious choices, but I'm also considering 8700 non-K and 8600K, as they should last longer. What I can't figure out is can I force turbo on all cores on 8700 with MCE? Or what clock can I expect? Would it perform better than 8600K@4+GHz? How much can I push it with Hyper 212 Evo? Or should I just get a 8500 and save €100?

@PfizersaurusRex: Or wait 2-3 weeks for Ryzen 2.

As someone who has a 8700 (non-k) and a hyper 212 evo.... MCE does not work with non k models...... as long as temps stay good it stays at 4.3ghz across all cores when being used and higher when less cores are being used ie one 4.6ghz two 4.5ghz etc.

But to answer your question about the 8700 performing better than 8600k , all depends on the game, BF1 MP for example runs better on 8700 than 8600k OC'ed with higher end gpu , since cpu usage on 8600k can be pegged at times which can cause noticeable fps drops. But even at 5.2ghz i5 8600k at 1080p tends to be less than 10% faster than i7 8700 at 4.3ghz with majority of games. Also hyper 212 evo isnt going to allow you to get an i5 8600k to those levels of overclocking.

So if you want something that will last longer I would aim for Ryzen 5 1600 or 8700. Ryzen 1600 offers alot more leg room than i5 8500,since it has more cache, can overclock even with that hyper 212 evo, and has 12 threads and AM4 has an upgrade path to Ryzen 2 and possibly 3.

Also if this upgrade can wait Ryzen 2 will be out in a few weeks which you can pick up one of those or be able to grab 1st gen ryzen even cheaper.

@04dcarraher: May cause a price drop on the Intel side as well.

I was dead set on Ryzen, but they made things complicated with the new mount and memory compatibility. With Intel it's simple, just put it all together and boot up. I'm not in a hurry, tho, so if Ryzen 2 is really just a few weeks ahead I'll wait and see what it offers.

best value i5 8400, best performance i7 8700k, for gaming, if multithreading with other apps not just gaming then new ryzens, well not new, more like refresh, will be out soon so i'd say wait for ryzen 2600

It's gaming we're talking about. All the multitasking I'm doing is playing music and having browser opened while gaming. Just not sure if i7 is worth it for future proofing. As in, say, 2 GPU upgrades over more than 5 years?

If you plan on playing at higher than 60fps then i7 makes sense, on 60hz not so much

get the i7 and do one great gpu upgrade, this should last you 5 years.
