Is it possible that I am bottlenecking my new gpu in my old rig from 2011. I just recently dropped cash into and it's just hit me, I could have just built me a whole new decent rig. Full PC specs below.

Asus P8P67 Pro Motherboard

Intel i5 2500k CPU (Overclocked to 4.5Ghz)

Corsair Hydro H60 Liquid Cooler

Corsair Vengence 16Gb 1600Mhz DDR3 Ram

EVGA G2 750w Power Supply

Sapphire Radeon 480+ Nitro 8Gb Video Card

Crucial MX300 275Gb SSD

NZXT s340 Black/Blue Case

Thermaltake Riing 12 series 2X blue led

Thermaltake Riing 14 series 1X blue led

I don't think so, check CPU usage in games if the CPU usage is often 100% then it's a bottleneck

There are programs to do that or you can alt tab out of a game and check task manager

it's possible in some cpu intensive games on 1080p but mostly non issue, faster ram would help out

digital foundry on 2500k

2500k at only 4.5Ghz...? is your chip broken or H60 clogged with dust?

Yup. I'm with everyone else. The 2500k is a gem of a processor. Shouldn't be a bottleneck for just about anything out there. And you should still have a bit of wiggle room with your OC if you want to squeeze a bit more performance out of it. I had my 2500k OC'd to a stable 4.8GHz for years on a similar cooler.

@SumPro: Yes, they're becoming more CPU heavy.

Thanks everyone on the input. I kind of figured it was time to retire my 6 year old. I just have a bad habit of holding on and upgrading old tech when I should have just used the money for a new build. It's already off the desk being backed up. Going to see what I put together this month to take its place.

@SumPro: I would recommend going Mini-ITX.

a little bigger.

If you do go down this route with a LGA 2011-3 please message me, there's only one board that supports that size and there's something you should know before building it. Also make sure to get a GPU that blows out.

Everyone but 1 person said its fine and you come to a consensus that the CPU is too old.

Skylake and Kaby Lake do offer improvements... I wouldn't be surprise if the 1600MHz RAM starts to bottleneck GPUs when the next generation of GPUs are released. Besides he can't get a M.2 drive with that old mobo. :P

Come'on I'm trying to convince the Commander in Chief/Wifey I need a new bleeding edge PC but honestly I want to move on to 4K and possibly VR. I ran to the boards in hopes everyone would tell me differently and give me the impulse buy Vida Loca feeling. Ive already started to put something together and it's not bleeding edge but I'm trying to save money for the best GPU 4K and VR setup.

Why?

Next GPU's wont be out till Q3 2017 at the earliest, we don't even have that 1080 Ti yet.

Your underestimating the speed of RAM, its still insanely fast.

@SumPro

4k isn't even an option yet, unless you can afford 2x Titan X's, or maybe 2x 1080 Ti's. GPU's don't have enough power yet for 4k 60fps, and with the new "sync" standards and tech, not a great time to buy new stuff.

@GTR12: For SLI I think the slower ram speeds are a problem already. Although if you got 2011 platform it isn't a issue due to quad channel memory.

Anyhow if I could find the examples again, they would also show that it isn't relevant for most users. Titan XP SLI with a Z170 system(or older) and 2133MHz RAM tops, it's easy to that the GPU should not be a bottleneck :P

@horgen: For people with SLI or Crossfire with 2 high-end GPU's, I don't think they would only get the cheapest RAM available.

@SumPro:

Well why didnt you say so in your first post. we are trying to advise you how to use your money wisely and you just want to splurge. If you put that at the beginning of the post then we wouldve happily shown you the way
