I'm seriously debating it, assuming the actual post-release OC numbers are good.
Anyone else?
I'll be getting a 8600K if the performance rumours are to be believed(better than a 7700K).
Was going to go for a Ryzen 1700... But after finding out the i5/i7 are going to be 6 core chips I just had to wait.
@Grey_Eyed_Elf: Yeah, if I upgraded every 3-4 years, I would probably go for the 8600K.
But my existing cpu is 7 years old, and the HT is actually useful occasionally. Whats an extra $150 over 7 years right?
I have a i7 5820k 4.6ghz 6 core 12 thread so no wouldn't be much of a upgrade.
I'm on a Gulftown i7 970, 6 core 12 thread, overclocked to 4.0 Ghz. Has served me well, but IPC has finally improved to the point where it's a worthy upgrade for me.
@appariti0n: I'm still interested on that i5 8600K for the 6 cores/6 threads sounds something worth upgrading over my i5 6600K, which by the way isn't a bad CPU at all, good all-around gaming that's for sure and having a new i5 8600K with extra cores/threads is all I really need for future proof for a very long time and this is gonna go on my very next new PC build.

Its all based on needs, my needs dont exceed what the performance of a i5 level CPU... Most of the cpu intensive games are MMO's and RTS game, genre's im not that fond of.
A 6 core i5 will be more than good enough for every game that isnt CPU heavy and the ones that are well a extra two cores of my current i5 should help a lot.

Yeah, and I love RTS, and get sucked into a good MMO every once in a while.
I also make extensive use of steam's in home streaming, and if the hardware codec in whatever video card I'm running decides to misbehave, or not perform well, HT helps a ton with having extra threads for encoding while still running the game when I switch to software encode.
@Grey_Eyed_Elf:
The fact that more and more games are utilizing 8+ threads nowadays the 6 core i5 is may run into the same issues later like with current i5's do now with the more cpu demanding games that use more threads. We can look at Gears of War 4 as a current example. FX 8350 is able to provide 6-7 fps higher minimum framerate than stock i5 6500k even though i5 can achieve around a 10 fps higher average. Extra threads allow cpus to simultaneously handle more tasks than a cpu with less threads/cores. Even though current i5's are over double the performance per clock than AMD's old FX series, each new task has to wait until previous job is done. which is why we are seeing current i5's falling behind i7's and Ryzen cpus.
I might as well wait then with moving the parts to my new case.
Who needs a new case? Ive been using my HAF 932 since early 2009 lol.
But yea I've held off in getting a Ryzen upgrade until intel releases coffeelake to see what it offers and if AMD would drop prices to compete. Either way I win intel i7 8700 or 8700k or ryzen 1600x or 1700x.

Why not get Ryzen? It's getting better and better especially with the newer BIOS updates. More games are starting to use 8 Cores 16 threads. Seems like Ryzen especially the 1700 seems like an awesome deal.
I personally use emulators, esp Dolphin and Cemu pretty much make Ryzen no go

Why not wait until Intel releases their new processors? Seems fair.
What games are starting to use 8 cores 16 threads?

None, nor in the near future. LOL.
My 4c/8t haswell still whoops ass. Waiting for Icelake.

Actually there are a few already starting to use beyond 8 threads like BF1 using 12 threads or even Gears of war 4 with using16 threads to name a couple.
I keep wanting to upgrade, but when I see benchmarks comparing things like Ryzen with my current CPU at comparable clock speeds (5960X) I realize it's not time yet. Maybe I will just buy a RGB cooler or something like that to hold me over.

Benchmarks told me otherwise but okay.

Because I am never happy with it. Also never happy with the cooling. If the cooling is good enough, it's to loud.
CPU is 5 years old (i7 3700K) so i have the urge to upgrade but I can't justify it yet.
It's still way faster than the consoles CPU and it runs game fine. Upgrading in my case wouldn't yield much reward since it's still fast and most games are more GPU intense.
I'll probably hold out till 2019, especially if games in 2018 don't get significantly more demanding CPU wise (I doubt they will to be honest).

Online multiplayer part that works well tends to work better with additional cores and threads.

Any source on that? Also isn't ZEN + or ZEN 2 being released in second half of 2018?
Benchmarks told me otherwise but okay.
How far will you go for the best performance? RAM with 3600MHz or more helps. I think you can get 3600 CL15 which makes a difference from 2133. A large one if some people are to be believed. Got a Skylake-X CPU, then look into OC the bus or ringspeed as well (unsure what it is called). Cooling to reach 4.5GHz or more stable for 24/7 operation?

“We are planning to update Tornado F5 to Z390 chipset supporting 8C/16T CPUs coming in H2/18,” Eurocom support says. “We will skip Z370 chipset.”

How far will I go for the best performance? idk, I know I'd never pay over $500 for a CPU or a GPU. My GTX 1080 cost $499.
Also RAM with 3600MHz or more gets expensive.

Here you go, a example of a game scaling to 16 threads

I'll keep that in mind. Delidding my chip tomorrow. If I reach 4.7 or more I might as well keep it.
I'll probably stick with my ryzen/1080ti combo for a while, happy I finally upgraded from a 2600k. Now I'm extra lazy about closing programs, even though overwatch can hiccup when Xilinx ISE enters the mapping/PAR stages.
I'm still excited for coffee lake, because the more cores in the average PC the better :)
@Xtasy26: If AMD has a better performing cpu than the 8700K in games by the time coffee lake launches, I'll buy AMD again in a heartbeat.
No need. The Haswell chips I run (i5-4670k and a i5-4460) I run do things just fine for me. I have yet to run a game that can't be maxed on 1080p with my 980Ti cards paired with these CPUs.
As far as I can tell, I should be content with my setups for the next 3-5 years as long as no hardware fails on me.
Just because a game uses more threads it doesn't relate to the performance directly. 4c and 8t beats out Ryzen 7 in every game... And a i5 beats out or is on par with a Ryzen 5.
Gaming doesn't require more than 4 modern Intel cores right now. SINGE CORE performance is still king for 99.9999999999% of games. AMD still lacks single core performance that competes with Intel.
A 6 Core i5/i7?... There's a reason I am waiting.
I have a 4670k and am going to buy a gtx 1080 here in the next few days so I plan on probably upgrading to coffee lake sometime after that. Originally planned on another i5 as the 6 cores are appealing but I'm torn now as I think I might want to future proof my rig for a bit.

4670K (especially if you have a little overclock on it) is actually a decent match for the 1080. I would probably wait, most of the recent PC games aren't that demanding.

Thanks for the advice, I do have a 144hz monitor so I saw some places that my i5 could possibly bottleneck in some games. I think i'll just get my 1080 and see how the performance is, i'll have plenty of time to decide if I want to upgrade. One of the main reasons I do want to upgrade is that my girlfriend wants to get into pc gaming and she is currently using my old phenom II x4 so she would get my parts.
