So, I'm probably going to build a new computer but, which one is better AMD or Intel? Should I go for an i5 or an i7?

This isn't my first build, been doing this since 2003. My current rig is an FX8350 system.

For a short time I'm going to use my old trusty GTX 970, then get either a 1080ti or a cheaper 1070. I'm not fussed about maxing everything out or doing 4K 60. I just want a system that I will mainly use for strategy games and a few single player FPS games.

Thanks in advance.

AMD with 2600X or 2700X paired with fast RAM, something 3600MHz CL 15 or so, could very well be good enough for you. Otherwise intel with 9700K or 9900K and 3200MHz RAM (or faster) will give you better performance in CPU heavy games, but also cost a lot more. The difference could very well be what the price diff between 1070 and 1080Ti is.

Which resolution will you be playing at?

9700K if mainly gaming. as for gpu if you are going for the 10 series make sure you get a new one on sale while stocks last as once stocks begin to deplete prices will rise and you would better served getting a 2070 or 2080.

To be honest where so far into this generation that it doesn't really matter for 99% of the users. There's 6 to 7 year old i5/i7s that are still allowing very high settings on games with a good GPU.

Any mid tier or higher Ryzen/Intel CPU is going to be over 5x faster than the consoles CPU currently and significantly faster than whatever they put in the next one.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions. I must say I'm moving towards Intel. Don't want to spend any more than £250 GBP for a processor. What you recommend for that?

Oh and I'll mainly play at 1080.

@Bond007uk: playing at 1080 there isnt much point in upgrading from your 970.

Thats the position im in tempted to upgrade, but at 1080p there isnt much of a difference as that card still maxes majority of games at 1080p

I recently upped my cpu too and from what I researched, AMD can't top Intel in performance. You'll get more performance per dollar with AMD, but you'll have less overall performance. Depending on where you live, you might find a better deal or more stock with 8700K than 9700K. Ryzen 7 2700 X is a good choice for the price though!

I am with you. I respect the bang for the buck and overall good performance of AMD, but I want top performance and that is why I went with 9900K over 2700X.

I have a 980, it still kicks ass. Prob about 50+ FPS in AC: Odyssey (didn't know they had an in-game tool for performance until I accidentally hit F1 haha) which is a beast of a game imo.

Battlefield 5 runs great.

I was all gung-ho for a few months on upgrading but now...not so much.

Might get me a new processor though I have a Intel i7 4790 which is still powerful but I think it might be old? Idunno.

@mrbojangles25: same cpu as me, its still a beast and doesn't need upgrading.

If anything its our 970 and 980 that are slightly limiting us in the odd game, the CPU is fine.
